2023 Toyota Sequoia Specs

While some overlanders have adopted the Sequoia as their trail rig in the last few years, it never made sense to me. That's because there were more capable 4Runners and Land Cruisers sitting next to the Sequoia in the Toyota lots. Why did you choose Sequoia?

Toyota all but eliminated the issue in 2022, not only by canceling the Land Cruiser here in the US, but by building an all-new Sequoia (as well as its Tundra pickup sibling) on a Land Cruiser 300 chassis.

Well, okay, this is indeed a Land Cruiser chassis; This is the new global F platform that will underpin all ladder-frame-based Toyota trucks in the future. Yes, this includes Tacoma, Hilux and 4Runner. But that's another discussion for another day.

While previous Sequoias have masqueraded as trail-ready machines, the 2023 Sequoia has not. It's just as capable as anything else. With this exciting proclamation, let's dive into it.

First, and I have to say this: The 2023 Toyota Sequoia looks amazing. Outgoing was a bit potatoy for me. This one is sharp but stiff and, let's be honest, has a much nicer nose than the 2022 Tundra.

The new Sequoia comes in five trim levels: SR5, Limited, TRD Pro and Capstone. We'll take a look at the SR5 and TRD Pro here. However, regardless of trim, all new Sequoias will be powered by Toyota's 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid, which has an engine-generator sandwiched between its engine and 10-speed gearbox. It produces 437 horsepower and 583 ft-lbs of torque. The Sequia can now tow up to 9,000 pounds - 22% more than the last generation.

The SR5 comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, a moon roof, heated seats, an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Add the SR5 Premium package and you get a chic new 14.0-inch touchscreen, Softex seats (vinyl instead of fabric), 120-volt cargo outlets and more.

You can add the TRD Off-Road package on SR5 and Limited trims. It comes with a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Downhill Assist Control, Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Monitor. TRD-tuned Bilstein shocks sit at all four corners behind special 18-inch wheels. Up front, the designers got a little pissed off and painted the front axle driveshafts red for extra flash.

The penultimate TRD Pro trim comes with second-row captain's seats, a heated steering wheel, a TRD roof rack, FOX inboard bypass shocks, a half-inch aluminum front skid plate, and TRD dual exhaust tips.

Pricing will be available closer to the time the trucks go on sale in summer 2022. Expect not to be able to leave a Toyota dealer with a Sequoia SR5 package with a TRD Off-Road for less than $55,000, I'll bet (if not much, much more).

However, it will be quite capable out of the box. In a press release, Toyota showed off a new adjustable cargo rack system at the rear. Supposedly intended to help families, I can imagine that it would be useful for transporting goods as well.

Given the potential, capabilities and reputation of the Sequoia, I fully expect it to be a very popular choice for overlanders this summer and into the future. With the exception of the Lexus LX600, the Sequoia is really the closest thing to a Land Cruiser 300 here in the States. I mean it runs on the same chassis.

Ignore its nameplate and style and you can buy a Sequoia and sensibly pretend you're landing in the latest and greatest Land Cruiser. However, you don't have to tell yourself fairy tales to spare your ego. The Sequoia looks like it will be a full-size SUV that you can be proud of on the track.
