What Are 'Tamagotchi Kids,' The Virtual Replacement For Children In The Metaverse?

Remember Tamagotchis, the famous handheld Japanese digital pets that came in a small device? Users had to care for Tamagotchis the same way they'd care for real pets. Now, Tamagotchi kids are about to make a debut, if an artificial intelligence expert is to be believed.

According to Catriona Campbell, an AI specialist, humans would soon be able to raise digital offspring. In conversation with The Guardian, Campbell explained why digital kids are hitting the scene soon, for better or for worse.

Digital babies are coming

In her new book "AI by Design: A Plan For Living With Artificial Intelligence," Campbell says that in about 50 years, "will have advanced to such an extent that babies which exist in the metaverse are indistinct from those in the real world."

She predicts that society will begin to embrace virtual children (that exist in the metaverse) within half a century, calling this demographic "Tamagotchi generation." In fact, she says that Tamagotchi kids would be a lot like real kids. Users will be able to play with them, feed them, and cuddle them. In return, kids would be able to respond using speech, depending on their age.

If you're not looking for full-time kids (yes, I know how absurd this sounds), you can simply switch your child off. If your virtual child spawns into a teenage monster, you can simply cancel your subscription or ignore the kid.

With various metaverses taking off and immersive tech at the helm, we could be living in a Sims video game very soon.
