Mischmetal is a rare earth element alloy with naturally existing proportions. It's also referred to as cerium mischmetal, rare earth mischmetal, or misch metal. A typical composition consists of roughly 50% cerium and 25% lanthanum, with trace amounts of neodymium and praseodymium. Its most common application is in the ferrocerium "flint" ignition device found in many lighters and torches, though an alloy consisting entirely of rare-earth elements would be too soft to produce excellent sparks. It is mixed with iron oxide and magnesium oxide to make ferrocerium, which is a tougher substance.

What is mischmetal made of?

 

Mischmetal was traditionally made from monazite, an anhydrous phosphate of the light lanthanides and thorium. The ore was cracked using either concentrated sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide in a high-temperature reaction.

 

The flint (spark-producing agent) in cigarette lighters and related devices is a mix metal alloyed with iron. Misch metal is also used as a deoxidizer in various alloys and in vacuum tubes to eliminate oxygen. It contributes to high strength and creep resistance in magnesium as an alloying agent.

 

An alloy containing only rare-earth elements would be too soft to produce good sparks. As a result, they are reinforced by combining them with iron oxide and magnesium oxide, resulting in ferrocerium, which is much tougher than an alloy composed completely of rare-earth elements. It is nearly impossible to differentiate one rare-earth element from another because these elements have nearly identical components in most chemical reactions. Because of this, mischmetal is utilized in the production of all rare-earth elements. It is used in steel foundries to prepare the FeSiMg alloy, eliminate oxygen and sulfur by producing stable oxysulphides, and bind up dangerous trace elements like lead and antimony.
