Cloud-native: How much do you know about the new buzzword in the IT world?

Cloud computing, cloud migration, cloud infrastructure… By far, we have heard about many cloud-related terms. Cloud-native is another word that has been in the buzz in the IT world for quite some time. Tech giants like Google, Amazon, Netflix, Facebook, Uber, and Twitter have already adopted a cloud-native approach. This has intrigued even small, medium and large companies to explore more about cloud-native technology.

What is cloud-native?

Cloud architecture refers to a data center that is placed somewhere. Its ownership belongs to different companies like Microsoft, Alibaba, and AWS. People generally pay them to park their data inside the center.

Due to its agility, ease of access, and effectiveness, cloud technology has become popular quickly. Millions of organizations worldwide have been building up their businesses around cloud technology.

Initially, cloud-ready applications were built with once-only developed programs, and then they were launched on the cloud. As a result, these apps faced multiple problems like:

  • Some features worked well only in a static environment.
  • They were highly dependent on the Operating Systems (OS) and the hardware.
  • They could not function well in a diverse environment and required custom configuration.
  • Maintenance of these apps was a demanding task.
  • These apps were limited to server capacity and had very little scope for expansion.
  • Cloud-native applications were developed as a solution to all these problems.

Cloud-native is an approach that focuses on increasing the speed and flexibility of applications built on the cloud. Cloud-native apps reduce time-to-market considerably with quick responsiveness, almost zero downtime, and advanced features.

Cloud-native apps are built and operated on the cloud using its containers, microservices, orchestration, and infrastructure. All these are expressed as a code. This app development approach ensures faster software development and scalability to meet future requirements.

Fundamentals of cloud-native

Cloud-native comprises five elements: Cloud, DevOps, Containers, Orchestration, and Microservices oriented architecture. Let us briefly glance at what role they play.
