Chartering transport vs courier: what are the differences?

Even for professionals in the sector, it is not so easy to define the difference between courier and transport charter. Here you will find our lighting.

What characterizes full truckload carriers compared to chartering is the fact that there is at least a break in load between the point of removal and delivery.

Transport messaging

In courier, a driver will be responsible for the removal of the goods during a tour dedicated to a geographical area. This merchandise will then be deposited on a splitting platform, where it will be sorted by destination area.

The goods will then be transferred to another platform, responsible for delivery to this destination area. Another driver will then be responsible for the delivery of this merchandise.

By dividing the transport into several stages, the carrier optimizes its collection and delivery rounds. This therefore optimizes costs. Conversely, the carrier multiplies the number of manipulations during the various breaks in load, and therefore increases its handling costs.

It is this balance between optimizing flows and increasing handling costs that explains the fact that couriers are more competitive on low-volume shipments. Even if this is not a mathematical rule, we often talk about a maximum of 5 to 7 pallets.

Transport or courier charter: how to choose?

Beyond the legal meaning of the term charter, what characterizes charter transport versus courier is the fact that the means of transport used will be the same on collection and delivery.

In most cases, this means of transport will not be dedicated: the carrier performing the service having filled his truck to optimize his journey thanks to freight exchanges or directly with freight forwarders.

When choosing between charter and courier, ask yourself the following questions:

  •  How much do I need to transport?
  •  What is the desired delivery time?
