Monmouth Park Picks for This Weekend's Racing Card

This weekend's card is a must-attend, but which races to bet on? Here are some picks for the best races in Monmouth Park: Hot Rod Charlie, Beautiful Lover, Varenka, Nay Lady Nay and more. If you are new to Monmouth, you may be wondering which races you should consider. If you love to bet on horses, you might also want to check out our Monmouth Park picks for each race.

Hot Rod Charlie

If you love thoroughbred racing, you'll love Monmouth Park Racetrack. The track is located in Oceanport, New Jersey. Hot Rod Charlie, the resident hot rod, hosts a weekly drag racing event there. For more information on this event, please visit the website. Hot Rod Charlie's Drag Racing is a way to celebrate the history of the Monmouth Park Racetrack. The drag racing event is free, and the winner gets an infamous Hot Rod hat!

While no one was hurt in the race, jockey Flavien Prat believed he could have gotten Hot Rod Charlie to back off with his whip. He said he had a good left hand. However, he did not whip Hot Rod Charlie because no one else had the privilege of using a whip. The whip, he said, was not used by anyone else in the racing office. The new crop rule will be enforced by a three-person committee of racing officials who will review each race.

Beautiful Lover

Trainer Christophe Clement will try to turn Moyglare Stud Farm's Beautiful Lover into a graded stakes winner in the Monmouth Park feature. The four-year-old mare earned black type last year when she placed second in the Grade 2 Hillsborough at Tampa Bay Downs and third in the Grade 3 Matchmaker. Clement noted that Beautiful Lover did not get the best trip last time out.

Varenka

This weekend is loaded with Grade 3 races, and one of them is the Matchmaker Stakes, a mile-and-a-half turf event. One of the picks for the event is #4 VARENKA, a homebred by Graham Motion. Last September, Varenka finished second in the Grade 2 Miss Grillo and fifth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She is trained by Hall of Famer Javier Castellano, and she will be making her seasonal debut under his guidance.

After winning the Grade 2 Lake Placid at Saratoga last year with Motion, Varenka has a track record at Monmouth. He's 12 for 34 on the Monmouth turf course, including two wins here. He has also won the All Along and Sand Springs at Gulfstream, and the Suwannee River at Laurel Park. The odds on Varenka are attractive enough, and he's worth a look despite the draw.

Nay Lady Nay

If you're looking for a longshot for the Kentucky Derby, Nay Ladynay is a dark bay mare with a few graded stakes wins under her belt. This lightly raced filly was too close to beat in her first two starts this year, but she has added ground in both her past two efforts. We'll also be taking a look at her jockey, Paco Lopez, who is back in the saddle.

This is the defending champion of the event, and she should be in near peak form. The second-placed JULIE FOXTROT may get an early lead, while COUNTERPARTY RISK has a strong pedigree and a proven record on this track and distance. If all of these runners don't get aggressive, you may want to consider KALIFORNIA QUEEN, who won two of three races without a break.
