ECG, types of ECG and Interpretations

For many, the heartbeat is the sign of life and but it has varied meanings and implications for physicians treating a person for possible heart complications and helping them to live longer. Even simple abnormalities in the heartbeat can have serious consequences and at times turn out to be fatal.

Electrocardiogram (EKG) measures and records the electrical activity of the heart. This test is performed using electrodes placed on the patient's chest. It gives a detailed graph that explains the activity of the graph. Careful study of EKG reports and drawing medical signs and conclusions from them is called EKG interpretation. When there is need for ECG test, Contact the best ECG Centre in Ambattur Chennai.

What is ECG?

An electrocardiogram or ECG or EKG is a simple and painless test that measures the electrical activity of the heart. Each heartbeat corresponds to an electrical signal starting from the top of the heart to moving downwards. When heart complications arise in a person, it affects the electrical activity of the heart.

When there is need for an ECG Test?

The doctor will recommend for an ECG test if he/she feels the symptoms to be indicating heart complications. The symptoms include:

o  Pain the chest

o  Trouble in breathing

o   Pounding, racing, or there is fluttering in the heart

o  There could be a feeling that the heart is beating unevenly.

o  There may be unusual sounds when your doctor listens to the heart.

Measuring the electrical activity of the heart helps the doctors in determining whether the chamber of the heart is oversized or overworked. In other cases, EKG can help determine the cause of symptoms and the type of treatment needed.

Types of electrocardiograms (ECG)

·        Stress test: Some heart problems only occur during exercise. A continuous electrocardiogram is done during the stress test and exercise. This test is usually performed while sitting on a treadmill or exercise bike.

·        Holter monitor: It is also called an ambulatory ECG or EKG monitor. It can record a person’s heartbeat starting 24-48 hours to 2 weeks at a stretch so that the doctor can analyze the symptom.

·        Event recorder: Some symptoms are not observed easily. Here, in this situation, the doctor uses the event recorder to record the electrical activity whenever it appears.

·        Loop recorder: This is a device that is implanted in the body under the skin of the chest. It allows the continuous remote monitoring of the heart’s electrical signals finding the fainting or palpitations.

Interpretation of EKG results

If the EKG result is found to be normal, the doctor could allow you to go home the same day. If the EKG report shows abnormalities, it can be the indication of heart problems. The signs that may be revealed in the ECG report:

o  Irregular heartbeat

o  Heart defects such as an enlarged heart, less blood flow, or birth defects

o  Electrolyte problems, chamber dilation or hypertrophy, or how electric signal moves through the heart

o  Blocked arteries or coronary artery defect
