The producer of the popular mobile tower defence game, Hypergryph, has announced the release of Arknights: Endfield, the next instalment in the franchise.
Several video game franchises have successfully transitioned from PC to console to mobile over the years. Because Call of Duty: Mobile has been so successful, Activision has announced that a mobile version of Call of Duty: Warzone is also in the works. However, fewer businesses have succeeded in moving in the opposite direction. MiHoYo almost pulled it off in 2020 when it released Genshin Impact on console and mobile at the same time, and developer Hypergryph is hoping to do the same with Arknights: Endfield.
The first Arknights, a free-to-play mobile tower defence game with RPG features, was released in 2020 and became an instant hit. Hypergryph reported that over one million people have pre-registered for the mobile game even before it was released outside of China. Arknights proved to be popular due to its addicting gameplay, detailed storyline, impressive graphics, and gacha mechanics that weren’t too obtrusive.
Hypergryph stated that Arknights would become a franchise, with Arknights: Endfield as the first instalment. The new game will be a 3D real-time RPG that will keep some of the strategy features from the earlier game. Endfield will have the same "worldview" as Arknights, but it will be set on a different planet, with a different cast of characters and a different storyline. The game is still in the early phases of development for PC and mobile platforms, and no release date has been announced. There has also been no indication of a likely introduction of a next-generation console.
So far, Hypergryph has released concept art, a trailer, and a gameplay demo for Arknights: Endfield, and based on what we've seen so far, the game seems a lot like PlatinumGames' pioneering action RPG Nier: Automata. The map interface is shown in the gameplay video, and it appears to have the same futuristic style as the Arknights UI. The film then changes to two people running through various desert locales before arriving in a bright oasis. Man-made things in the demo appear to have been abandoned for a long time, giving the environment a post-apocalyptic air that fits the Arknights concept.
The game will have new gameplay elements, but players will still be in charge of a group, accomplish objectives, and unlock chapters to advance the plot. Endfield's battles will take place in real-time, unlike Arknights' turn-based combat, and players will face a range of adversaries and factions to destroy.
