How To Develop Your Career While Working Remotely?

Remember the first time you entered an office and met new people in this vast organization? Do you remember how nervous you might be or the jitters you might have felt? Wasn't it exciting yet challenging for you to be in a new place, adapt to the surroundings and make yourself associate with the company? It was right, but you made it through successfully. And, now since you are going to be a part of yet another organization, something similar must be going on; however, this time, you don't have to struggle to adapt yourself to the surroundings, new office building or infrastructure because you have to start your new job remotely, from the comfort of your home.

However, as comfortable as it might sound to be, you much be having multiple questions as to how you will excel while sitting away from the organization, how they will recognize you, how you will connect and how you will learn and grow in this new position, while simply clicking with your manager via Zoom call or Google meet.

So, looking at the list of questions you might have, we have a few ideas to help you to build a strong profile in your new work-from-home job.

Firstly, had you been in your new office physically, you might have taken some time to look around the office and meet other people in the office on your first day. To have that same experience, we will have to dedicate a couple of weeks and connect with people you'd like to introduce yourself to by setting up one-one meetings.

During the meetings, you can ask people to suggest at least one other coworker and even ask them to facilitate an introduction for you. If you're unsure who the most relevant people you want to connect with are, you could ask your manager for a list, portraying that you are actually putting effort into knowing the organization well.

Additionally, connecting with your colleagues personally, after work, socializing, having fun meetings purely for informal non-work discussions, or joining Slack channels to know them better and learn from their life experiences is essential. This is how you will build strong connections and will get people who will observe your work, performance and growth personally and would recommend you when the need will be.

Further, it's a good idea to connect with someone in your onboarding session who joined around the same time as you. Even though you will be working remotely, you'll likely have similar doubts and questions and thus can rely on each other as you adapt to the work environment, regardless of the departments you are a part of. For instance,  you might be able to help them with particular software, and they might be able to answer a question you have about enrolling in benefits. At the very least, this person will resonate with how you feel when it comes to the confusion of starting a remote job.

Ultimately, it depends on how you interact and approach your colleagues and seniors. If you have doubts, no one will come and help you out until you will connect with your manager and discuss your problems and issues. People will tend to forget you if you don't make your presence felt to them. To stay in the loop, it's necessary to regularly ask questions and connect to discuss your work and progress and take feedback. Performance reviews and feedback id essential for professional advancement. You should inquire about your performance and take

feedback regularly to understand if you can get along with the management and working style of the organization and realize what's working well and what needs improvement.

Conclusively, the more you communicate, the more you will be productive in this new work-from-home job as you would have been in an in-person job. Your willingness and enthusiasm to know the company and its employees portray that you are willing to associate yourself with the organization, and along with your own personal growth and benefits, you want to add value to the company and become an essential part of the team. If you can ace through your initial few weeks and connect with some great coworkers, nothing is as comfortable as a work-from-home job to bring out the best efficiency from within.
