Examination into the Attitudes of Lower-Level Construction Workers to Stress Management
Workplace stress has been the primary cause of stress for a long time within the workforce. The position of low-level construction workers within organisational hierarchies have rendered them unheard and underrepresented to a phenomenon widely experience by all even though they face stress levels higher than most. Coupled with the demanding nature of their jobs and poor coping mechanisms, lower level construction workers are at risk of serious health implications. The research aimed to investigate the workers opinions on stress management within their industry and determine the most effective stress management interventions.
To achieve this aim, a total of 18 lower-levelled construction workers were surveyed via online questionnaire containing open ended questions. A thematic analysis was undertaken on the collected data to generate recurring themes and observe patterns. It was found that low level construction workers are generally unaware of the organisational stress management interventions within their own workplaces and require extensive stress elimination interventions to cope with their stress. It was concluded that construction workers personally cope with stress poorly, and are thus in need of structured organisational interventions, as it affects them more harmfully than they realise in all aspects of their lives.
