Applications of DNA Profiling Tests in India

The blueprint for our bodies comprises genes and governing factors such as growth, development, and functioning. Almost every human cell contains a copy of the blueprint, stored inside a special sac called the nucleus. About 23,000 genes are estimated to be beaded along tightly bundled strands of a chemical substance called oligonucleotide acid (DNA). These strands are known as chromosomes. We, humans, have 46 paired chromosomes (half inherited from each parent), with two sex chromosomes that decide gender and 44 chromosomes that dictate other factors. Some fragment of DNA is unique to each individual. DNA profiling test is a way of establishing identity and is used in various ways, such as finding out whether the twins are identical or fraternal.

Steps Involved in DNA Profiling

Following are the steps:

  • The process of DNA profiling begins with the collection of samples from the parties involved. First, the buccal swab, made of sterile cotton, is rubbed against the cheek walls to collect the epithelial cells. It is also possible to extract DNA from diverse samples, such as blood, saliva, and hair. Then, the extracted cells will undergo STRs (Short Tandem Repeats) analysis.
  • DNA profiling does not use restriction enzymes to cut down the DNA. Instead, it uses Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology to produce many copies of the respective STRs sequences.
  • Once PCR produces enough copies of sequences, electrophoresis separates different-sized DNA molecules, which undergo through laser, ultimately generating a unique DNA profile.

As a result, it is doubtful that you will share the same profile as anyone else unless you are an identical twin.

Uses of DNA Profiling Tests

Some of the uses of DNA Profiling are:

  • Peace of Mind DNA Profiling Test: This test establishes paternity, maternity, sibling-ship, avuncular, or grandparentage between two or more people.
  • Organ Transplant DNA Profiling Test: A DNA profiling test can be helpful in organ transplantation cases. Under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA), 2014, a living organ donor is required to prove genetic kinship with the organ recipient.
  • DNA Profiling Test for Immigration Purpose:  In immigration cases, visas are more likely to be denied when the relationship between the beneficiary and petitioner becomes questionable.
  • DNA Profiling for Legal Matters: The DNA profiling test is crucial in legal matters, including relationship disputes, child custody, and property/will inheritance. Therein, the DNA profile is the only authentic way to establish an individual's identity between two or more people.
