Things to know about High Performance Insulation Materials

Improving the thermal efficiency of our existing building stock is one of the key measures that can make a significant contribution to lowering our society's CO2 emissions. In comparison to traditional insulation products, novel high performance insulation materials with superior low thermal conductivity values offer several advantages. Following a brief overview of heat transfer principles in thermal insulations, two types of superinsulation will be discussed in depth: vacuum insulation panels (VIP) and microporous thermal insulations.

The unique characteristics of these thermal insulations will be highlighted, and best practise examples will be provided. Finally, a general summary and discussion of future trends in thermal insulation research and development will round out this topic.

Typically, the core of a high performance insulation materials is derived from state-of-the-art resin chemistry. The additives in the formulation can influence performance characteristics. Typical materials include polyurethane, cellulose, and foamed rubber. These compounds are used for a variety of applications. High performance insulation materials can also be made from glass. These compounds offer excellent compression and shear strength as well as superior temperature resistance. They are lightweight and offer long-lasting thermal insulation. They are ideal for marine and industrial applications. They are also incombustible and waterproof. They are available in various thicknesses.
