In the fuel cell, the Gas Diffusion Layer is a crucial part. Its primary job is to make sure reactants like oxygen and hydrogen get to the electrocatalysts' active phase. By assisting in the removal of water from the active locations, it also acts as a method of water management. Numerous uses for it exist, including polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and hydrogen/oxygen air fuel cells. The layer is typically composed of hydrophobic substances coated on carbon microparticles. Depending on the need, these materials can be produced in a variety of methods.


In a typical fuel cell application, the Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) performs a number of crucial functions and is frequently integrated into the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA). Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEMFC) and Direct Methanol Fuel Cells are typical GDL uses (DMFC). A Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE), which is often marketed or installed separately from the Membrane or MEA, is a Gas Diffusion Layer that has been coated with a catalyst. The GDL/electrode GDE's function, however, is the simple part.


The Gas Diffusion Layer is a porous structure created by pressing carbon fibres together to create carbon paper, or by weaving carbon fibres into carbon cloth (such as the GDL-CT and ELAT) (e.g. Sigracet, Freudenberg, and Toray). Many of the currently manufactured standard Gas Diffusion Layers have a Micro Porous layer (MPL) and a hydrophobic treatment (PTFE). MPL and PTFE aid in water management and interaction with the membrane.
