What Is A Cystoscopy Bridge?

Maximilian Carl Nitze invented the modern cystoscope and primarily used it to inspect the bladder.

Cystoscopy was publicly demonstrated in the year 1879. The primary companies that manufacture cystoscopy devices are Karl Storz, GmbH, Richard Wolf GmbH, and Olympus Inc.

cystoscopy bridge is a medical device used for endoscopic diagnosis and urologic applications treatment. A cystoscope is a thin camera used to look inside the bladder; this procedure is called cystoscopy. The cystoscope device is made of stainless steel alloy.

The urethra is the tube that carries the urine out of the body. A cystoscope is inserted into the urethra and passed into the bladder. This process allows the medical professionals to see inside the urethra. In this cystoscope method, minor surgical tools and instruments can also be passed down to treat bladder problems.

Types of cystoscopy:

There are two types of cystoscopy

  • Flexible cystoscopy – when the procedure is to look inside the bladder.
  • Rigid cystoscopy- when the process is to treat a problem inside the bladder.

Cystoscopy uses:

  • Removes bladder stones, inserts and removes stents, treats blockages, and injects medicines inside the bladder.
  • To check blood in urine, problems during urinating, and long-lasting pelvic pain.
  • To check the problem in the urethra or bladder.
  • To check UTI Urinary tract infection
  • To perform a biopsy to check the presence of cancer cells.

Parts of a Rigid cystoscope assembly:

  1. Cystoscope sheath
  2. Cystoscope obturator
  3. Bridge
  4. Light cable
  5. Telescope.

Cystoscope bridges:

Cystoscope bridges used for adults are universal; they can fit into all sheath sizes. The bridge length is 6cm. Integrated cystoscopes are specially designed cystoscopes; their bridge and telescope cannot be detached.

Integrated cystoscopes have smaller shaft sizes and more significant working channels.

Advantages of the detachable bridge:

  • It helps to empty the bladder efficiently
  • After detaching the bridge, it helps pass a more prominent size catheter.
  • Enables to attach evacuator to evacuate the stones, chips, clots, etc.

Types of cystoscopy bridges:

  • Without side-channel
  • Single side-channel
  • Double side-channel

The single side-channel cystoscopy bridge provides an extra instrumental channel during the cystoscopy procedure. They are designed to provide excellent utility, are durable, and are highly compatible. Side channels are autoclavable.

Parts of the bridge:

  • Telescope channel
  • Accessories channel

The Telescope channel allows the telescope.

Accessories channel helps to pass the accessories like wire forceps and ureteric catheters. This channel has rubber shod for an easy passage of the instrument.
