A potential transformer (P.T.) is an instrument transformer that is employed in power systems for measurement and protection purposes. The main function of a potential transformer in a power system is to measure high alternating voltage.

 

The structure of a potential transformer, or PT, can be the same as that of a typical transformer. Primary and secondary windings are present. Due to the fact that the transformer is a step-down, the main windings have more turns than the secondary windings.

Types of Potential Transformer Based on Function.

Based on its design, the potential transformer can be classified into two categories.


Electromagnetic Potential Transformer

The electromagnetic PT is a potential transformer that converts high voltage to low voltage using electromagnetic induction. These are traditional wound-type transformers with a magnetic core and wound primary and secondary winding. As a result, they are also known as wound type potential transformers with core and shell types. Such PTs don't employ a capacitor or any other electronic device to lower the voltage.


The issue with electromagnetic PT's insulation at high voltage is a downside. As a result, at voltage above 10Kv, its design becomes quite complicated. To solve the insulating issue, capacitive dividers are utilized in the following type.


Capacitive Potential Transformer

Capacitive potential divider and an electromagnetic transformer are combined in it (auxiliary transformer). The high line voltage is divided by the capacitive potential divider to get it below 10kV. The capacitors are wired in series on the auxiliary transformer's primary side. The voltage is further reduced with high accuracy by the auxiliary transformer so that it may be measured by the voltmeter. For power lines, these transformers are employed.
