Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is a type of internal combustion in which well-mixed fuel and oxidizer (usually air) are compressed to auto-ignition temperature. This exothermic reaction, like other types of combustion, releases energy that can be converted into work and heat in an engine.


The HCCI engine combines the features of a regular gasoline engine and a diesel engine. HCSI refers to the combination of homogeneous charge (HC) and spark ignition (SI) in gasoline engines. SCCI refers to the combination of stratified charge (SC) and compression ignition (CI) in modern direct injection diesel engines.


In the same way as HCSI does, HCCI injects fuel during the intake stroke. HCCI, on the other hand, boosts density and temperature by compression until the entire mixture spontaneously reacts, rather than utilizing an electric discharge (spark) to ignite a section of the mixture.


The temperature and density rise caused by compression is also used in stratified charge compression ignition. It does, however, inject gasoline later in the compression stroke. Combustion happens at the fuel-air interface, resulting in more emissions but allowing for a leaner and higher compression burn, resulting in greater efficiency.


Controlling Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition HCCI necessitates the use of a microprocessor and a physical understanding of the ignition process. HCCI designs accomplish gasoline engine emissions while maintaining diesel engine efficiency.


Without a catalytic converter, HCCI engines emit extremely low quantities of nitrogen oxides (NO x). To meet automobile emissions control rules, hydrocarbons (unburned fuels and lubricants) and carbon monoxide emissions must still be treated.

Recent studies have demonstrated that hybrid fuels containing different reactivities (such as gasoline and diesel) can aid in the regulation of HCCI ignition and burn rates. Over a wide load and speed range, RCCI, or reactivity regulated compression ignition, has been shown to produce extremely efficient, low emissions operation.
