Another advantage of 3D cell culture is the ability to study the effects of drugs and other treatments on cells. In 2D culture, cells are exposed to drugs and other treatments on a flat surface, which does not mimic the complex interactions that occur in vivo. In 3D culture, cells are embedded within a matrix, which can affect the way they respond to drugs and other treatments. This can lead to more accurate and representative results, which can ultimately help to develop more effective treatments.


A synthetic environment is created for 3D cell culture. A culture environment called 3D cell culture enables biological cells to interact with their surroundings in all three dimensions. In terms of cellular characteristics and behaviour, cells grown in 3D cell culture share characteristics with cells found in living organisms. With the help of this method, the cells can develop in vivo in their natural habitat.


There are several methods of 3D cell culture, including scaffold-based methods, scaffold-free methods, and microfluidic systems. Scaffold-based methods involve the use of a 3D scaffold to support and shape the cells. These scaffolds can be derived from natural sources, such as collagen or fibrin, or can be synthetic, such as PEG or PLGA. Scaffold-free methods, on the other hand, do not use a scaffold and instead rely on the natural tendency of cells to aggregate and form 3D structures. Microfluidic systems involve the use of microfabrication techniques to create microscale channels and chambers that allow for the precise control of cell behavior and the study of complex biological processes.
