Roof Repairs You Can Do Yourself

Finding damage on your roof does not automatically mean that you have to spend a lot of money to replace your roof. If the problem is small, then most likely you can do the roof repairs yourself. Being able to do the small repairs yourself will not only save you money, but you can also prevent the problem from getting bigger and having to call on professional roofing services.

There are some problem areas of your roof that may be a bit difficult to fix. One of them is the chimney. Another is where the two roofs connect. If you have damage of any kind, large or small, in these areas, it can cause leaks in your roof. You can also have leaks in your roof because of missing shingles, cracking or blistering on your roof, an installation error in your home's siding, or cracked shingles. These are all repairs you can do yourself unless the damage is huge. Learn more here about this article.

Most homes have gutters to allow water to drain off the roof, but if they don't work properly, they can cause water to clog on your roof. This puddle of water can damage the surface of your roof, which can lead to cracks and blisters on the roof. These roof repairs should begin by soaking up the standing water on the roof with absorbent cloths and materials.

Once you've removed the water, you'll need to carefully inspect the roof to determine exactly where the damage occurred. Use a knife to carefully remove any debris from the gap in the roof, but be careful not to dig in too deep or you may cause further damage. The reason you need to dig up this rubble is that water has usually pooled under the rubble. You need to make sure you get all the water out and let it dry. Once it's completely dry, you can take some roofing cement and apply it to the affected area. Make sure it's properly sealed.

If you have damaged shingles due to storms or bad weather, this type of roof repair is a bit more complicated, so you need to make sure you follow the tips to fully repair this damage. When making this repair you will need a flat pry bar, roofing cement, and aluminum sheets.

You will need to pry up the damaged shingle along with the shingles on either side and apply some roofing cement under the shingle where you will be attaching the surround. Once the edging is in place, add some more cement and apply pressure so the clapboard and edging are properly attached.

If you do roof repairs yourself, make sure you do it safely. Make sure you use a good, sturdy ladder that you can climb to make the repairs and attach the ladder to your house.
