Sodium cyanide: what is it? A chemical compound's application and disadvantage!

In addition to its use in the mining industry, sodium cyanide is also used in the manufacture of plastics, dyes, and other chemicals. Sodium Cyanide applications typically involve the use of much smaller quantities of sodium cyanide than in the mining industry, and strict safety protocols are in place to ensure worker safety and prevent accidental exposure.

Despite the strict safety protocols in place, accidental exposures to sodium cyanide still occur. In 1984, a gas leak at a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, released a cloud of toxic gas containing sodium cyanide, killing thousands of people and injuring hundreds of thousands more. The incident remains one of the worst industrial disasters in history.

Inhalation of cyanide is also extremely dangerous and can cause death, especially in young children. People who inhale the cyanide should move to fresh air and seek medical attention at once. Symptoms of cyanide poisoning are usually severe, and are associated with loss of consciousness or coma. Some people may die quickly or recover quickly, but others experience prolonged, debilitating illness that requires medical intervention. Handling of cyanide in the workplace is carried out using the "basic prudent practices" supplemented by additional work with compounds of high toxicity. If a specific chemical is being handled with a hazard rating higher than the "green zone" for a given duration, it is required to take approval of environmental safety office or its equivalent before working with this chemical.
