Butylphenol is a colourless, pale-yellow organic liquid with the formula (CH3)3CC6H4OH. Ortho tertiary butyl phenol has extensive uses in the perfume, fuel, resin, and pharmaceutical industries. The hydrocarbon is manufactured for commercial uses in factories under controlled conditions. According to the OSHA records, observations of skin irritation in the factory workers indicate early signs of leakages. Here are some essential features of the synthesis of hydrocarbon.

All about the manufacturing of Ortho tertiary butyl phenol

When Ortho tertiary butyl phenol is manufactured on a large scale, you must ensure that laboratory conditions are maintained even in the factory. This means there should not be any contamination in the atmosphere, and the hydrocarbon, once generated, should be packed and sealed in tankers or vats. Here are some factors you need to consider regarding the synthesis of Butylphenol.

  • In the laboratory, it is prepared by acid-catalyzed alkylation of phenol with isobutene. During the reaction, 2-tert-butylphenol is a significant byproduct generated. As 2-tert-butylphenol is a highly explosive chemical, you must ensure no open flames near the chemical. The entire reaction must be carried out in a sanitized environment.
  • Ortho Tertiary Butyl Phenol or OTBP is manufactured on a large scale by reacting phenol with isobutene. When the reaction occurs in the presence of sulfonated polystyrene-poly divinylbenzene, it leads to ion exchange between resin to obtain ortho-tertiary-butyl phenol as the main alkylation product. The large-scale production of OTBP requires certain temperatures to ensure maximum reactions.
  • When you carry out the reaction of the phenols with isobutylene at a particular molar ratio at 95°C, it results in a product mixture.

The final product, Butylphenol of CAS 88-18-6, is packed in ISO tankers or galvanized drums. This prevents any chemical reactions from changing the composition of hydrocarbon.

Uses of OTBP

The hydrocarbon OTBP has multiple uses in the agrochemicals, pharmaceutical and perfume industries. You will find that OTBP is the primary material used to manufacture antioxidants. Here are some of the standard applications of OTBP:

  • OTBP is commonly used in manufacturing perfumes. As the chemical is colourless, it does not change the innate nature of the final product.
  • It is used in the pharmaceutical industry to develop anaesthetics. In the case of intravenous anaesthetics, OTBP is used as an additive to increase the effectiveness of the anesthetic.
  • Ortho tertiary butyl phenol has significant applications in agrochemicals, mainly to produce Cis-2-t-butyl cyclohexanol. It is obtained by hydrogenating ortho-tertiary-butyl phenol in the presence of catalysts. This is used not only in the manufacturing of agrochemicals but also in the perfume industry.

The hydrocarbon is highly flammable. Hence, you must ensure no open flames near the chemical.

OTBP is produced on a large scale to be supplied to companies that use hydrocarbon to create pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and similar products. The hydrocarbon can stabilize the final product and enhance its effectiveness.
