Fatty Acid Methyl Esters As A Diesel Fuel Alternative Has Gained Significant Attention

Fatty Acid Methyl Esters are produced through a chemical reaction called transesterification. This reaction involves the reaction of a vegetable oil or animal fat with methanol in the presence of a catalyst, usually sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. The reaction produces two products, fatty acid methyl esters and glycerol. The chemical composition of FAMEs is similar to conventional diesel fuel.

However, Fatty Acid Methyl Esters have a lower energy content due to their higher oxygen content.

This can result in lower fuel efficiency and decreased power output in engines that are not optimized for FAMEs. FAMEs can be produced from a wide range of feedstocks, including soybean oil, rapeseed oil, palm oil, and animal fats. The choice of feedstock can affect the properties of the resulting FAMEs, such as their viscosity, density, and cold flow properties.

A by-product of the trans-esterification of methanol and fatty acids is the Fatty Acid Methyl Esters. Additionally, it is claimed that fatty acid methyl esters can be produced using a range of biosources, such as soybeans, rapeseed, palm oil, and so forth. According to reports, rapeseed biodiesel or biofuel has a high oil content, lowers carbon emissions, and totally burns fuels without leaving any trace.

Fatty acids and methanol react to form Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME). They are comparable to those in conventional diesel and also present in biodiesels, but they emit fewer hazardous emissions, making them non-toxic and biodegradable. They are made using the transesterification method from both animal and vegetable oils. FAME is produced using rapeseed, soybean, UCO, palm, sunflower, and animal fat as basic materials.
