ASET Assessment Process For A Professional Technologist

Attaining a positive ASET assessment for the designation of P. Tech, Professional Technologist means that you are at a senior level within your field. Besides that, this grade will enable you to practice engineering or geoscience within existing regulations and codes.

In other words, having a positive ASET assessment for this role will enable you to sign off and stamp your own work within your designated scope of practice.

In usual cases, a professional Technologist is a senior member who is working within a larger organization or a member who works as a consultant or has their own business. A member who has a P.Tech. title can:

·       Boost operational efficiency of businesses in the scientific, professional and technical services industry

·       Enable eligible technologists to work to their full potential

·       Offer an innovative option when staffing engineering teams

·       Strengthen the appeal of the technology professions

·       Lessen the workforce shortage in the occupation of engineering

Required qualification:

1.  The candidate needs to be a C.E. T. member of ASET, and their reputation must be good.

2.  They need to be a graduate of a 2-year technical post-secondary program.

3.  The applicant must possess post-graduate technical engineering or geoscience experience of at least 6 years, which includes 2 years under the supervision of an Alberta P.Geo. or P.Eng.

Process:

Application:

·       Apply online and pay the fees

·       ASET staff will open your application file for transcript/academic assessment from the C.E.T. application

Proof:

·       You need to upload a work experience spreadsheet

·       You also need to provide contact information for professional references

Exam:

You need to complete the National Professional Practice Exam, which is also called NPPE

Assessment: 

·       Staff will review the experience spreadsheet and ask for additional information if necessary

·       Subject matter expert reviewers will do an application pre-evaluation (after a period of 3 to 4 weeks of submission)

·       APEGS/ASET Joint Board of Examiners will review the completed application and reach a decision about registration (JBoE meetings happen on a quarterly basis)

Post-assessment:

·       Decision letters will be sent to new members 3 to 4 weeks after the board’s decision

·       A new P.Tech. member may order digital or/and physical professional stamp

·       New P.Tech. members may demand a framed certificate or/and member ring

·       A P.Tech. member has to complete annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
