Vacation Ideas for the Eid Weekend

Ramadan, a month full of life, colour, shopping, and good food, is coming to an end, and soon everyone will be celebrating Eid-al-Fitr. We should all celebrate this holiday with all our hearts, whether or not we are Muslims. The best thing about Eid this year is that it will be on June 15, which is a Friday, so we will have a long weekend to enjoy it. If we can't take part in religious rituals, we should at least go on a trip to mark the holiday. Even though it's summer, so what? I say that this may be the best time to take a short trip because there won't be many tourists in most parts of India and prices for flights, trains, and hotels will be cheaper.

Kochi

Kochi is a great place to go on holiday because it is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on one side and the backwaters of Vembanad Lake on the other. Cherai Beach is a great place to relax, soak up the sun, or go swimming, and the Chinese fishing nets are a must-see. If you like history, you should visit Fort Kochi and the Mattancherry Palace. The Paradesi Synagogue, the Kerala Folklore Museum, and the Indo-Portuguese Museum are some other places you can visit. Don't leave the city until you've seen a Kathakali show and eaten some spicy Malabari food.

Rishikesh

If you're looking for peace, the word "Rishikesh" will make you think of yoga, ashrams, peaceful rivers, and quiet mountains. If you're an adventurer, though, it will make your energy rush. After all, Rishikesh is known as "India's Adventure Capital." For a real rush, go white water rafting on the Ganga River, which has trips that range from 9 km to 34 km. As a way to blow off steam, you can bungee jump or ride a big swing from a platform 83 metres above a seasonal stream. Still not happy? Then, try rock climbing, rappelling, zip lining, camping, or walking in the beautiful hills.

Ooty

One of the highest hill towns in the country, Ooty is known as the "Queen of Hills." Yes, it is even higher than places like Nainital, Manali, Shimla, and Srinagar, as it is almost 7350 feet above sea level. The toy train that runs between Ooty and Mettupalayam has some amazing views, so make sure you ride it. Once you get to the hill town, you can see amazing views from the top of Doddabetta, look at beautiful flowers at the Government Botanical Garden, and relax at Pykara Lake and Falls, Kalhatty Falls, and Avalanche Lake. You should never miss out on boating on Ooty Lake or climbing in the lush hills all around.

Jaipur

How can you talk about weekend trips and not name Jaipur?! It goes without saying that this is one of the best places to learn about India's rich past. You should definitely check out the Amer Fort, City Palace, Nahargarh Fort, Jaigarh Fort, and Albert Hall Museum. Stop by the Hawa Mahal to take lots of pictures. Go for a hot air balloon ride from Amer Fort if you are brave enough. You have got to go on a shopping trip at is famous markets like Bapu Bazaar, Nehru Bazaar, Tripolia Bazaar and Johri Bazaar. Evenings are best spent at Chokhi Dhani, a place where you can enjoy everything about Rajasthani culture, from puppet shows to delicious food.

Mysore

Mysore is to Karnataka what Jaipur is to Rajasthan: it is the artistic centre of the state. It was the home of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, whose memory is still as strong here as it was when they lived there. You can learn about their lives by going to Mysore Palace, Jaganmohan Palace, and Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace. On top of the Chamundi Hills, the Chamundeswari Temple is a great place to learn about the history of the area and look out over the whole city. You can rest at Brindavan Gardens or buy a beautiful silk saree in the evening. St. Philomena's Cathedral is another great place to visit, mostly because of its Gothic design. Also, don't forget to rent a boat on Karanji Lake and eat a lot of Mysore Pak.

Amritsar

Amritsar is one of the most lively cities in the country, where people try to enjoy every moment to the best. Everything about them shows how much they love life, from the way they talk to the big smiles on their faces to the folk dances they do. When you are in the city, you must go to Harmandir Sahib to soak up its spirituality. Don't forget to wait long enough for the tasty Karha Prasad and the daily Langar. Help out as a helper if you can; it will be well worth your time. Jallianwala Bagh, where the tragic massacre of 1919 took place, is also a popular place to visit. You should save your evening for a short trip to the Attari-Wagah Border, where a lively celebration to lower the flag is held. Another thing you must do is treat yourselves to the most real Punjabi treats you can find.

Varanasi

Varanasi is the place to go for a peaceful vacation where you can get in touch with your spiritual side. Varanasi, also called Kashi, is a place like no other. It is built on both sides of the holy Ganga River. It is best known for its ghats, which people use to bathe, pay respects to the river, and bury their dead.  The most well-known of these are Dashaswanedh Ghat, Assi Ghat, Panchganga Ghat, and Manikarnika Ghat. But Kashi Vishwanath Temple may be the most important place of worship and tourism here. You can go to the Gyanvapi Mosque and the Alamgir Mosque to see paintings and tiling that are very detailed. Start your day in Varanasi with a boat ride on the river, and in the evening, go to the Ganga aarti. Try the famous Banarsi Paan if you want to add a little sweetness to your life.

Pondicherry

Pondicherry is like France away from France. It has tree-lined boulevards and cute little cafes all over the place. Since it hasn't become a busy business centre yet, life here is slow, which is just what you need to unwind. In colonial times, the Grand Canal brought water to the city and also separated the French Quarter (also called "White Town") from the Tamil Quarter (also called "Black Town"). When you walk through these areas, you can see temples, churches, and masques with different architectural styles. If you'd rather relax by the water, you can go to Promenade Beach, Rock Beach, or Serenity Beach. Don't forget to stop by Auroville's Aurobindo Ashram and the beautiful Matrimandir.

Dehradun

The green Shivalik Hills can be seen all around Dehradun, which is in the Doon Valley. You can come here and stay for two or three days without much trouble. Guchupani, also called Robber's Cave, is a great place to go to get some rest. It is made of natural limestone, and rivers run through it! Sahastradhara is another famous place to have a picnic in Dehradun. Its name means "a thousand streams," which is also what it is known as. And it makes sense to visit Mussoorie while you are in Dehradun. It is known for places like Kempty Falls, Gun Hill, Lal Tibba, Bhatta Falls, Camel's Back Road, Company Bagh, Adventure Park, and Dhanaulti.
