Different Types of Evaporators and Their Applications

Evaporation is an essential process used in various industries, including food processing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and petrochemicals. Evaporators are used to separate the solvent or liquid from the solute or solid. This process involves heating the solution until the liquid evaporates and leaves behind the solid or solute. Different types of evaporators are used in different industries depending on the requirements. In this blog, we will discuss the different types of evaporators and their applications, with a particular focus on wiped film evaporators and thin film evaporators.

Falling Film Evaporators

Falling film evaporators are commonly used in the food processing and dairy industries. The solution is fed into the top of the evaporator, where it flows down the inside of a vertical tube in a thin film. The tube is heated, causing the solvent to evaporate, leaving behind the concentrated solute. Falling film evaporators are efficient and can handle large volumes of liquid.

Rising Film Evaporators

Rising film evaporators are used in the sugar industry to concentrate sugar solutions. The solution is fed into the bottom of the evaporator, and steam is introduced from the top. The steam heats the solution, causing it to boil and form a rising film of bubbles. The concentrated solution is collected from the bottom of the evaporator.

Wiped Film Evaporators

Wiped film evaporators are used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical industries. The solution is fed into the top of the evaporator, where it forms a thin film on the inside of a vertical tube. The tube is heated, and a rotating wiper blade scrapes the film from the tube's surface. This process continuously replenishes the film, resulting in a high evaporation rate and high product quality.

Thin Film Evaporators

Thin film evaporators are similar to wiped film evaporators and are used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. The solution is fed into the top of the evaporator,

where it forms a thin film on the inside of a heated tube. The tube's design ensures that the film remains in contact with the heated surface for a short period, resulting in a high evaporation rate and high product quality.

Wiped film evaporators and thin film evaporators are both high-performance evaporators that are widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The main difference between the two is the way in which the film is removed from the heated surface. Wiped film evaporators use a rotating wiper blade, while thin film evaporators rely on the tube's design to ensure that the film remains in contact with the heated surface.

In conclusion, evaporators are essential in various industries, and different types of evaporators are used depending on the specific application. Wiped film evaporators and thin film evaporators are two high-performance evaporators that are widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. These evaporators offer high evaporation rates and produce high-quality products, making them ideal for applications where efficiency and quality are essential.
