Useful Tips For Cleaning And Maintaining Your Glock Magazines

Glock magazine maintenance is not a hot topic among firearm owners. People like talking about what they do and do not do in regard to their guns, but their magazines are typically forgotten. This is mainly due to the idea that they do not need a lot of care. Whilst that is true in comparison to guns, forgetting about the equipment that is responsible for feeding your gun is a huge mistake that will end up catching up with you.

Cleaning your magazines

If you have a semi-auto pistol then it is very easy to clean it, unless it is excessively dirty based on how you use it. This could happen from numerous fired rounds or a tumble in mud or dirt. A lot of malfunctions caused by dirty magazines will be due to debris like small rocks, dirt and sand.

Before cleaning your magazine, it is crucial to disassemble it. A lot of magazines have a floor plate that should be pushed up, into the body of the mag to slide the base off. When it comes to magazines, there are scores of types of magazines out there, both double stack and stack, and there are some exceptions such as Glock magazines. Glock mag bodies have teeth that engage their base plate.

If you want to disassemble a Glock mag, you should squeeze the body so that the teeth disengage your base plate and push up slowly on the floor plate just like normal mags and slide the base plate off. This is easier said than done especially when you buy firearms online for the first time.

After disassembling your magazine, you should just clean it the same way you clean a gun. The level of cleaning is up to you but if you are going to do it then you should do a good job. You can use a tool to get the gunk and dirt from the housing of your magazine. An old toothbrush or a nylon brush wrapped under a paper towel can be used to do this job. However, a dedicated mag-cleaning brush will be helpful if you are willing to spend some money on it.

Run your brush in and out several times until the patch or paper comes out. If your magazines have become dirty with general fouling and dry dirt, you can just scrub them with a paper towel or a dry brush. If it has been a while or mud was involved then you can rinse and scrub them using water and dry them thoroughly. You should check the follower and the spring and wipe them accordingly. You should then proceed to reassemble your mag and you will be done. You do not need lubrication.

Cleaning your Glock magazines doesn’t have a recommended timeline. You can clean them as often as possible because it does not cause any harm. Some people like to reserve their cleanings for when mud or dirt is involved and that is still okay. However, you might need periodic maintenance.
