Rehabilitation Robots Cover Everything from Prostheses to Rehabilitation Therapies

Rehabilitation robots include a wide range of mechatronic devices, from artificial limbs to robots that support rehabilitation therapy or provide personal assistance in hospitals and homes.

A robot is "a reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized equipment through variable, programmed motions to perform a variety of tasks". Although this definition was intended for industrial robots, it identifies the key characteristics of programmability, flexibility, and movement. Rehabilitation Robots are "the restoration of an individual to an optimal level of physical, mental, and social functioning and well-being".

Other robots include mobile robots such as automatic guided vehicles for obstacle avoidance, tracking along a wall, maneuvering through a door and the Meldog project to guide a visually impaired person, orthotics and prosthetics, robots in education, and robots in therapeutic applications.

The last few decades have seen rapid and extensive developments in robotics for the rehabilitation of sensorimotor defic following central nervous system (CNS) injury. Many of these innovations have been technology-driven, limiting their clinical application and impact. However, rehabilitation robots should be designed on the basis of neurophysiological insights underlying normal and impaired sensorimotor functions, which requires interdisciplinary collaboration and background knowledge.

This review summarises the evolution of the field of rehabilitation robotics and the current state of clinical evidence. It highlights fundamental neurophysiological factors that influence the recovery of sensorimotor function after stroke or spinal cord injury, and discusses their implications for the development of effective rehabilitation robots. It thus provides insights into essential neurophysiological mechanisms that need to be considered for the successful development and clinical implementation of robots in rehabilitation.
