Becoming A Well-Known Film Trailer Composer

Composers work in the post-production process, but sometimes they provide temp cues for the Director, even before principal photography. Usually, the film score is unique to each project; however, if it becomes widespread, the music can be licensed for other jobs like commercials.

The Composer provides the score for a motion picture. Robert Allaire, who has scored multiple features in various genres, says, “Every day can be different depending on what stage of a project I’m on.” It is incredible how music can affect the overall feeling of a scene. It can change the mood, highlight important information, and smooth transitions between moments.

The Composer is a freelance position, so it’s up to the individual to take a job. Allaire reminds us that “film composing is a demanding job, and it’s not unusual for me to work sixteen-hour days, seven days a week. Weekends don’t exist, so carving out the personal time anywhere possible is important. They’re often interfacing with the Director, going back and forth on cues until everyone is satisfied with the result.”

Most of a Composer’s work occurs unsupervised. There’s no actual off switch, only deadlines that must be met. As a result, the job can be draining, so Composers will try to take a few weeks off between projects (but they don’t always get that luxury). Projects sometimes overlap, so it becomes a game of trying to finish one, so the deadline for another doesn’t get too close. Time management and self-motivation are essential nuances of being a Composer.

The Composer works with the film’s Director and Producers to determine what music will go into the project. They also frequently work with the Film Editor to get the music into the film. The people on staff in the scoring department are Musicians, Mixers, and Orchestrators. The Composer will be at the final sound mix of a movie or send a representative in their place to ensure everything is translating correctly.

If an individual is filling up the place in the culture of composing film trailers that includes its values, purpose, and principles, then they can easily reach the heights of success. One example of such a case is Mark Siegel.

Siegel is an American Songwriter and Record Producer based in Nashville, TN. He has worked with artists across several genres accumulating over 50 million streams. He is known for his work featured across Film & TV and Film Trailers.

Siegel was raised in Hackettstown, NJ, growing up playing Football. He moved to Nashville, TN, after graduating High School at 18 with no plans other than collaborating in the music industry. In the early 2010’s he became part of the Alt-Pop Rock group NEEDMORE and moved to Los Angeles with the band.

After departing the band in 2013, Siegel moved back to Nashville, began touring with several artists, and began his artist development firm Static Flight Music Group, where he ultimately signed Social Media Pop Sensation Jacob Whitesides, with whom he’s known for frequently collaborating.
