In this form of treatment, liquid substances (surfactant) are injected right into the artery that supplies blood to the affected area. For example, because the embolic agents block blood flow to a particular area, there is a risk of tissue damage or even death if too much blood flow is blocked. In addition, the procedure may not be suitable for all patients, particularly those who have significant underlying medical conditions or who are taking certain medications.

 

There are also different types of embolic agents that can be used in vascular embolization, and the choice of agent depends on the specific condition being treated. Some common embolic agents include:

 

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles: These small synthetic particles are commonly used to treat uterine fibroids and other conditions. They are injected into the blood vessel feeding the affected area and cause a blockage that shrinks the abnormal tissue.
