Different Types of Retinal Diseases and Treatments

Eye Disease Diagnosis

Diagnosing retinal disease can be challenging as the diagnosis can often be difficult to make due to the complexity of the retina and its structure. A comprehensive eye exam, including a visual acuity test and dilated eye exam, is the best way to diagnose retinal diseases. During a comprehensive eye exam, a doctor will pay close attention to your symptoms and determine if there is any damage or disease affecting the retina.

To aid in diagnosis, your doctor might use a variety of advanced diagnostic tests. An angiogram is one test used to find out how well the vessels in the retina are working. This test involves taking photographs of the back of the eye and looking for abnormal blood vessels, leaking or shrinking areas, or any signs of disease. Your doctor may also use optical coherence tomography (OCT) to check and measure the thickness of the macula, a part of the retina that is important for seeing details.

Retinal Disease

Retinal diseases are conditions that cause damage or changes to the structure of the retina, leading to vision impairment. There are a variety of  different retinal diseases, but some of the most common include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and retinal vein occlusion.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a retinal disease that affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision. AMD usually begins with a gradual loss of central vision and can eventually lead to blindness. Treatment for AMD currently involves the use of treatments, such as anti-VEGF therapies, to reduce the swelling of the macula and laser therapy to reduce the risk of morbid retinal diseases in patients with newly diagnosed AMD.

Diabetic retinopathy is a retinal disease that occurs when tiny blood vessels in the retina become blocked, damaged, or leaky. It is a progression of diabetic complications and can cause vision loss or blindness. Treatment for diabetic retinopathy includes laser treatment, anti-VEGF injections, and vitrectomy.

Retinal detachment is a medical emergency in which the retina becomes separated from its supporting tissue, which can lead to blindness. When the retina detaches, it no longer sends visual signals to the brain. To treat this condition, surgery must be performed to keep the retina attached to the back of the eye.

Lastly, retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a condition in which blood vessels in the retina become blocked, causing vision loss. Treatment for RVO usually involves laser therapy to reduce the swelling and seal off the blocked vein to prevent further bleeding.

Retinal diseases can be frightening and cause serious vision loss, but fortunately, most retinal diseases can be treated with success and vision can be improved through the use of medications, laser treatments, and surgery. Early diagnosis is key to preventing serious vision loss, and it is important to speak to your doctor if you have any symptoms of retinal disease.
