Flue Gas Desulfurization: Mitigating Environmental Impact In Power Plants

Dry Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) : Unlike WFGD, DFGD does not involve the use of liquid reagents. Instead, a dry sorbent, such as hydrated lime or sodium bicarbonate, is injected into the flue gas stream. The sorbent reacts with sulfur dioxide to form solid byproducts, which are collected using particulate control devices. DFGD is suitable for applications with lower gas flow rates and lower sulfur dioxide concentrations. Semi-Dry Flue Gas Desulfurization: This technique combines elements of both wet and dry processes.

A spray dryer is used to introduce a fine mist of reagent into the flue gas, creating a humid environment. The reaction between the reagent and sulfur dioxide occurs in the dryer, forming a dry powder that can be collected using fabric filters or electrostatic precipitators. The widespread adoption of FGD technologies has yielded numerous benefits for industries and society as a whole: Reduced SO2 emissions: Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems have proven to be highly effective in reducing sulfur dioxide emissions by up to 90% or more. This reduction significantly improves air quality, reduces the risk of acid rain formation, and minimizes the associated environmental and health impacts.
