A Breakthrough in Diabetes Care: Understanding the Artificial Pancreas Device System (APDS)

The ground-breaking technology analyses blood sugar levels to maintain consistent levels of blood sugar and utilises an algorithm to calculate how much insulin should be supplied. A ground-breaking NHS experiment revealed that it required significantly less user input than existing devices and was more successful at managing diabetes.

A system of three components known as an artificial pancreas functions to imitate how a healthy pancreas regulates blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, in the body. The majority of those who benefit from an artificial pancreas have type 1 diabetes.

The Artificial Pancreas Device System does not produce insulin in people with type 1 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes manage their blood glucose levels by monitoring them and administering insulin many times per day by injection or insulin infusion pump. Your blood glucose level is automatically tracked by an artificial pancreas, which also determines how much insulin you'll need during the day and administers it.

The majority of artificial pancreas systems demand that you count and input how many carbohydrates you ingest each meal. A tiny sensor that is implanted under the skin serves as the basis of a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), which measures blood glucose levels every few minutes. The sensor wirelessly transmits the data to a smartphone app or an insulin infusion pump programme.

The computer programme determines how much insulin is required and alerts the insulin infusion pump when it is time to start giving insulin. When blood glucose levels are outside of your desired range, the insulin infusion pump will slowly release modest doses of insulin throughout the day. Different insulin pumps come in various varieties.
