From Preventing To Protection: Understanding Influenza Vaccines

Influenza Viruses are ever-evolving, there must be regular global surveillance and frequent influenza vaccine reformulation. The main method for minimising or combating the burden of influenza mortality and morbidity in the population is influenza vaccination.

If vaccine is to be produced and supplied on schedule, the rapid transmission of influenza viruses during seasonal epidemics and sporadic pandemics must be taken into account throughout the entire process.

The selection and development of ideal candidate Influenza vaccines viruses, as well as the development and accessibility of vaccine potency reagents, are prerequisites for the manufacturing and supply of an effective influenza vaccine.

Each year, in February and September, the World Health Organisation (WHO) holds technical consultations to recommend viruses for inclusion in seasonal influenza vaccinations for the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively. Based on data from the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN), now known as the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System, several recommendations have been made. Since 2004, GISRS has also taken into account influenza A (H5N1), A (H9N2), and other subtypes of influenza viruses for pandemic preparedness reasons.

A collaborative effort between reasserting-developing laboratories and WHO Collaborating Centres (CCs) is required to create high yield candidate vaccine viruses.

Objectives:

  • Identify the types of influenza viruses requiring vaccinations.
  • Summarize the absolute and relative contraindications of the vaccine.
  • Explain interprofessional team strategies for improving care coordination and communication to advance influenza vaccination and improve patient outcomes.
