Learning Disabilities That Are Common

Auditory and visual processing disorders

Disorders of the auditory and visual systems in the brain can make it difficult to process information from sight and sound. This may be brought on by a hereditary condition or a brain injury like a concussion. Your ability to learn to read and write may be improved by these problems, especially if you need help differentiating between the sounds of letters or words. Because maths concepts like ratios and percentages are not visually presented in the same manner as words on a page are, it can also make it difficult for you to comprehend them.

Due to the similarities between these two conditions, auditory processing difficulties are frequently misdiagnosed as ADHD. However, unlike ADHD, auditory processing difficulties make it extremely difficult to focus on anything.

Issues with executive functioning (poor prioritisation and planning)

A common condition is executive function disorder. Executive function dysfunction (EFD) is a term used to describe difficulties with executive functions that are not brought on by other physical or mental health issues.

Executive functions are mental abilities that help us plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and multitask. Executive function disorder (EFD) is a term used to represent a spectrum of issues with executive functions. These abilities are crucial for managing emotions and behaviours and organising, prioritising, and finishing tasks.

People with EFD may struggle with one or more executive functions, which can hinder their performance in the job, school, and other facets of their lives.

Prioritisation and planning are crucial for jobs, school, life, relationships, and health. Missed deadlines, forgotten appointments, undone chores, and subpar performance at work or school result from inadequate preparation. Poor prioritisation makes deciding which competing jobs or activities should be finished first difficult. When several due dates coincide, students with executive functioning impairments could find it challenging to prioritise which tasks should be completed first.

This impairment might cause issues when multiple individuals are vying for your attention at once during social events like parties or weddings (which necessitate prioritising your time). The amount of time each person should receive may not be known until after they become angry at being ignored by you and exhibit signs of frustration in their tone of voice while waiting on an answer that never comes back within the anticipated amount of time (or ever).
