1) Hydration of Maleic Anhydride: This entails addition of water to maleic anhydride at high temperature and pressure to yield fumaric acid. Maleic anhydride is first obtained from n-butane or benzene via catalytic oxydehydrogenation.


2) Fermentation of Sugars: Certain filamentous fungal strains like Rhizopus sp. are capable of fermenting sugars like glucose, yielding fumaric acid as the main product. Advanced fermentation technologies coupled with fungal strain improvement have enhanced yields.


China is currently the largest producer and exporter of fumaric acid worldwide. Other key manufacturers include Japan, Germany, Italy, USA, etc. Global demand is steadily rising by around 4-5% per year driven by its widespread industrial utility.
