Geophones are planted directly on the land surface in lines to receive the ground vibrations from the seismic source. Land surveys are used for onshore exploration.


- Marine Seismic Surveys: In marine surveys, seismic sources like airguns are towed behind a survey vessel on the sea surface. Hydrophones laid out as cables are deployed on the sea floor to record the reflected seismic signals. Marine surveys are commonly used for offshore exploration in territorial waters and exclusive economic zones.


3D Seismic Technology


Convention 2D seismic methods provided limited subsurface imaging capabilities. Today, advanced 3D seismic techniques have revolutionized subsurface exploration like never before.


In a 3D seismic survey, multiple parallel lines of geophones (on land) or hydrophones (marine) are deployed over an area, instead of just a single line as in 2D surveys. This dense grid of receivers allows surveying a volume of the subsurface rather than just portions of horizontal slices.


3D seismic data provides a detailed, high-resolution volumetric image of subsurface geological structures. Detailed horizons, faults, lithological variations and hydrocarbon prospects can be accurately mapped with 3D seismic surveys. This significantly reduces exploration risks and enhances successful discovery rates.


Applications in Resource Exploration


Seismic surveys find extensive application in exploration for multiple sub-surface resources:


- Oil and Gas Exploration: Seismic surveys are indispensable for hydrocarbon exploration both onshore and offshore. They help in locating potential hydrocarbon traps, imaging reservoir properties and defining drillable prospects.


- Groundwater Exploration: Understanding aquifer structures, depths and extent aids effective groundwater management. Seismic methods play a key role here.


- Mineral Exploration: Reflection seismology aids deep exploration for minerals like coal, base metals, nickel, diamonds and gemstones by imaging buried ore bodies.


- Geothermal Energy: Seismic delineation of underground hot aquifers or heat reservoirs aids development of geothermal power projects.


- Geohazards Assessment: Surveys image faults, shear zones etc. assisting evaluations of earthquake, landslide or subsidence risks for public safety and infrastructure projects.




With technological enhancements like broadband acquisition, full-waveform inversion and time-lapse surveys; the resolution and fidelity of seismic images keep improving remarkably. This is transforming exploration like never before, allowing assessment of resources once considered inaccessible.
