The agony of people had due to demolition of historic vicinage

Being called the spiritual and cultural capital of India, Varanasi is called the “City of God.” Earlier it was known as Kashi which means to shine. It is believed when the universe was built, the first ray of light fell on the river Ganga that lightened and brightened up the whole city and Hindus consider it one among the twelve Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The name of the temple city changed to Varanasi in 1956 and Varanasi owes its name to two tributaries that flow through the borders of the city. “Varuna” flows from the north of the city and “Assi” flows from the southern side. Combining both the tributaries name, Varanasi got its name.

Prime Minister NarendraModi’s dream project was to build a hassle-free route for people who travel to Kashi Vishwanath Temple during festivals. Yogi Adityanath and Uttar Pradesh government thought to convert this dream into reality. Thereby Adityanath’s government-sanctioned ₹600 crore for the project after its approval in December 2017. The project was all about to build a passage for travellers that will directly Enroute them to the 18th Century shrine of Lord Shiva, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Yogi Adityanath proposed that after the execution of the project, it will be easier for travellers to proceed to Kashi Vishwanath Temple from the banks of River Ganga. It will be a direct route for passengers to visit the temple through Manikarnik aghat,Jalasen and LalitaGhat.

To build the 700 meters long corridor it cost destroying homes and shops worth an area of 45,000 sq. Meter. More than 300 homes were demolished, and families who have been residing there since generations also saw their properties being destroyed by the government. The chaos stuck the Supreme Court to back out from being involved in Ganga-Kashi- Vishwanath pathway project.

One of the angry resident smack at Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating, “ Why should be? By demolishing 300 houses, he will lose not even 10,000 votes”. Later on, he claimed, “Varanasi is defined by its galis (narrow lanes) and by creating this corridor, he is robbing Banaras of its very identity.”

The AAP also affirmed that more than thousands of people lost their livelihood because of construction of corridor. “People who have been living and working here have been displaced. Their families lived here for hundreds of years. Now, they are being told to find livelihood elsewhere, away from the centre of the city,”. The AAP also professed that the state government also destroyed some nearby ancient temples. Contrary to this a senior district administrator said, “The idea is that the Kashi Vishwanath temple should be visible to pilgrims from the Lalita and ManikarnikaGhat. So, we will have to demolish some more homes”.

The AamAdmi Party claimed to rebuild the property and comprehended “Varanasi is known for its small alleys and its ghats. They are destroying the very character of this place. We demand that the UP government stop this project and restore all demolished sites. If it doesn’t, we will take this movement across the state”.
