Fisker Inc., fresh off a merger that valued the company at $3 billion and has given it $1 billion to work with, announced a lineup of four vehicles. The Ocean SUV (arriving in 2023), will be joined by a sports sedan, another SUV, and a pickup truck. Fisker is pursuing a lightweight business model: It doesn't want to build a factory, but rather work with contract manufacturers to make its vehicles. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Henrik Fisker, CEO of the electric-vehicle startup that bears his name, has $1 billion to work with — and a master plan to make the most of it. "When we created Fisker Inc., we set out to create a company that could deliver electric mobility as a service, but do so through a range of highly emotional and differentiated vehicles," he said in a statement. Earlier this month, Fisker Inc. merged with Apollo, the huge private-equity firm, in a once unusual, now increasingly common sort of deal that valued the company at $3 billion.   For more than year, Fisker has been avidly showcasing his Ocean SUV, the company's first offering, which until the merger remained a prototype, living primarily on social media. But Fisker — whose previous company, Fisker Automotive, was undone by the financial crisis and some freakishly bad luck — now has the cash not just to turn the Ocean into reality, but to roll out three more vehicles behind it. By mid-decade, the company said, its lineup will include the Ocean SUV, a "segment busting super-sports sedan," a sports crossover, and a pickup truck. Fisker doesn't want to be vertically integrated That's right, a pickup truck. These days, pickups are to EVs what sports cars were to the space a decade ago. (Who can forget the original Tesla Roadster?) The difference here is that the big automakers are getting into the game. GMC just announced a revived Hummer pickup will go into production next year. Chevy says an electric full-size is on the way. Everybody is waiting for the electric Ford F-150, and of course, Tesla is building a new factory in Texas, the heart of pickup country, to manufacture its Cybertruck. Fisker's approach, as the Danish-born designer and entrepreneur said in an interview with Insider, is to avoid owning the production process for its vehicles. "We don't want to be a vertically integrated car company," he said. "We're not going to do our own manufacturing. It would be stupid for any EV startup to make a brand-new factory." Instead, Fisker intends to contract out the work, leaving him to do what he does best: design compelling vehicles, promote them enthusiastically, and push a new business-model into the market, one based on experience. "A new generation of buyers has a new view on mobility," he said. "Their first ride in a car wasn't in their parents' old five-speed coupé. It was in the back seat of an Uber. They don't care how big the engine is. They're looking at the user interface." And maybe at the size of the bed, too. FOLLOW US: On Facebook for more car and transportation content! But in the meantime, the company (and the GMC brand, under which the resurrected Hummer will be sold) is teasing a side profile of the truck — along with a more traditional SUV version without a pickup bed. The Hummer silhouettes appeared in a new ad that GMC released on Wednesday shortly after parent company GM announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2020. GM posted a nearly $800 million loss for the quarter, which was better than expected considering the company — like others — went through a weeks-long pandemic-related production... Continue reading…

Election cybersecurity experts said Tuesday that "the electorate may not be prepared for how long it's going to take" for winners to be declared after the general election on November 3rd. A panel that included two cybersecurity experts who served in the White House agreed that simply counting ballots may take a week or two.  Any litigation that follows that counting could postpone results for much longer in a scene reminiscent of the 2000 election, when results were delayed until January.  The experts also said voters' loss of trust in the system may be the biggest risk in the upcoming election.  Despite fears of foreign interference, hacked voting machines, and disinformation campaigns, there is some optimism that the country is better prepared than in 2016.  Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. If you're an American mentally preparing to settle onto the couch on the night of November 3 and see who wins the presidential election – and many other races – you might want to pull the couch out into a sofa bed and get plenty of provisions.  "It's going to take a while," Betsy Cooper, policy director at the Aspen Institute, said at a virtual panel discussion on election security Tuesday hosted by Highwire PR. "It will take a week or two just to count the ballots. If there are any irregularities or litigation over the results it could take much longer."  That conclusion about what awaits Americans on Election Night was unanimous. "It's not going to look like previous Election Nights...with the parties and balloons," said Bill Harrod, federal chief technical officer of cybersecurity company MobileIron. Just fielding results of electronic ballots, mail-in ballots and in-person ballots will be time-consuming, but ensuring the results are accurate and have not been tampered with will be a patient process.  "The electorate may not be prepared for how long it's going to take," said Maggie MacAlpine, cofounder of the DEFCON Voting Machine Hacking Village, an area at the annual cybersecurity conference where hackers have tried (and succeeded) in hacking voting machines.  Trust in elections is the biggest risk, experts warn Many risks await America in November, from threats of foreign intervention like the Russian interference in 2016 to controversies over disinformation on social media. But those things are not as fragile as another risk in the election, the panel said.   The experts agreed that retaining voters' trust in the process may be the most biggest priority of the election. "The biggest threat is a loss of trust for the electorate. If people lose faith in the election process, that's the most damaging thing that can happen," Harrod said.  Michael Daniel, president of security industry group the Cyber Threat Alliance and former special assistant to President Barack Obama on cybersecurity matters, concurred. "That's the threat we're trying to mitigate." Slowly going through results and processes and ensuring the security of systems will be crucial, Daniel said.  "Trust is huge," agreed Mick Baccio, a security advisor at data analysis company Splunk and another former advisor to Obama on cybersecurity. "And it might not take much disinformation to threaten it."  Some optimism that US is better prepared than in 2016  Despite the experts' concern, Baccio, who also led cybersecurity for former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, said he believes "we're in a much better place than we were in 2016. I think we've gotten much better." Baccio praised the hiring of a chief information security officer by Joe Biden's presidential campaign, new efforts at the Department of Homeland Security, a program run by Microsoft, and Google's participation in another. "By this time in 2016, the DNC had been hacked," he said, referring to the hacking and publishing of emails from Democratic National Committee officials in June and July of 2016. "I think we've learned a lot since then." With mail-in ballots, electronic ballots and in-person voting providing an obstacle course for election officials in November, the experts suggested that the most comparable US presidential election might not be 2016 but 2000, when election officials scrutinized results for more than two months – including the tiny paper dots poked out of paper ballots in Florida.  "What's the digital equivalent of hanging chads?" Harrod asked. "We might see them." SEE ALSO: DHS is worried about ransomware and other cybersecurity attacks on voter registration databases Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: How 'white savior' films like 'The Help' and 'Green Book' hurt Hollywood

Give her a challenge and she'll come up with creative ways to solve it.She and her husband Steve are the owners of Cole's Orchard in Green Bluff. When she wasn't working as an assistant course director for physical therapists at Spokane Falls Community College, Mary enjoyed growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers in her eclectic garden. In recent years, she has struggled with the roots, which seep into her planting bed.I set it off with five layers of gray mow, and it worked fine, but soon roots crept up stealthily between the places Where I had nailed it to the bed.She dug up the whole bed and pulled out a network of roots from the soil.Despite changing several layers of commercial weed blocks, the roots returned within a year.At this point, Mary felt very depressed and decided to try some unusual solutions. She bought a vinyl sign on Craigslist, folded it in half, picked up the pad, covered it on the side, then screwed it out and relined it on the metal bed."Before I put the pad in, I tilt the soil beneath it to create a slight downward slope towards the front of the bed for drainage purposes," she explains.

Olivia de Havilland, one of the last remaining stars of Hollywood’s golden age and the oldest living Academy Award winner, died of natural causes on Sunday at her home in Paris. She was 104.Her publicist Lisa Goldberg confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter.Gracing the silver screen in both big and small roles, in a career stretching over 50 years, de Havilland was perhaps best known for her performance as Melanie Hamilton in “Gone with the Wind,” and for making multiple films with Errol Flynn. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, for “To Each His Own” in 1946 and for “The Heiress” in 1949.She is also forever enshrined in the history of workplace law, scoring a major legal victory over the Hollywood studio system in 1944 that became informally known as “the de Havilland law.” Her lawsuit against Warner Brothers resulted in California state regulations that limited the extent to which artists could be bound to contracts. It catalysed the eventual end of the powerful studio system, which often constrained actors’ career opportunities.De Havilland had a lifelong personal and professional rivalry with her younger sister, Joan Fontaine, which became a major part of her star persona and the stuff of Hollywood legend. The two actors ― the only pair of siblings to win Oscars in a lead acting category ― clashed over everything from their careers, to their romances, to their mother’s funeral. Fontaine, who died in 2013, said de Havilland resented sharing the spotlight and began antagonising her younger sibling as soon as she was born.“I remember not one act of kindness from Olivia all through my childhood,” Fontaine said in a 1978 interview with People magazine. Both were nominated for the Best Actress Oscar in 1941 ― Fontaine for Alfred Hitchcock’s “Suspicion” and de Havilland for “Hold Back the Dawn.” They were sitting at the same table when Fontaine was announced the winner.“I stared across the table, where Olivia was sitting directly opposite me. ‘Get up there, get up there,’ Olivia whispered commandingly. Now what had I done?” Fontaine later recalled in her memoir. “All the animus we’d felt toward each other as children, the hair-pullings, the savage wrestling watches, the time Olivia fractured my collarbone, all came rushing back in kaleidoscopic imagery. My paralysis was total.”Unlike her sister, de Havilland rarely spoke about the feud. But in an interview with The Associated Press for her 100th birthday in 2016, she referred to Fontaine as “Dragon Lady” and described their relationship as “multi-faceted, varying from endearing to alienating.”“On my part, it was always loving, but sometimes estranged and, in the later years, severed,” de Havilland said. “Dragon Lady, as I eventually decided to call her, was a brilliant, multi-talented person, but with an astigmatism in her perception of people and events which often caused her to react in an unfair and even injurious way.”De Havilland was born in Tokyo on July 1, 1916, to British parents. She grew up in California, where she and Fontaine, a year and a half younger, were raised primarily by her mother, a former theatre actor. As a teenager, she began performing in community theatre productions and gave up a college scholarship when she landed a role in a production of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Hollywood Bowl. She reprised the role in Warner Brothers’ movie adaptation in 1935, which launched her film career.“It was an illustrious beginning,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2015.The studio paired her with Flynn, who ended up being her co-star in a total of eight feature films. Their onscreen chemistry spurred rumours of a real-life romance, but de Havilland repeatedly denied it. Later in life, she admitted to having feelings for Flynn, saying that their last film together felt like a “loss.”“I experienced a sense of grief and loss, a terrible feeling, but couldn’t define it at the time. I had sort of a sense of that you may know a person one way but not others. Errol and I were not sharing experiences and life but instead sharing the lives of these characters we were playing,” she recalled in a 2006 interview. “But, oh, he did mean a great deal to me, but in that day, a woman did not declare her feelings for a man.” After the success of “Gone with the Wind,” de Havilland’s career continued to soar. In addition to winning two Oscars for Best Actress, she also received nominations for “Hold Back The Dawn” and “The Snake Pit.” In the latter film, released in 1948, de Havilland played a woman living in a psychiatric hospital after experiencing a mental breakdown. The movie’s realism inspired states to reform conditions in mental institutions.De Havilland grew tired of the film industry and her celebrity by the 1950s. She moved to Paris, where she would remain for the rest of her life, taking fewer acting roles and preferring reality over the artifice of Hollywood.“I loved being around real buildings, real castles, real churches—not ones made of canvas,” she told Vanity Fair in 2015. “There were real cobblestones. Somehow the cobblestones amazed me. When I would meet a prince or a duke, he was a real prince, a real duke.” Later films included “Light in the Piazza” (1962) and “Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte” (1964), co-starring her friend Bette Davis. She also returned to theatre and appeared on numerous TV shows, including the NBC miniseries “Anastasia: The Mystery of Anna,” for which she received an Emmy nomination in 1987. As de Havilland got older, her deteriorating vision and hearing forced her to conduct interviews over email. Even in writing, though, she maintained her charm and wit and was candid about her career, including her experiences with sexism in Hollywood ― “a fact of life I simply had to accept,” she said in 2016.“Men felt threatened and mistrustful of women who had good ideas, and one had to employ immense tact when dealing with directors and producers,” she said. Men felt threatened and mistrustful of women who had good ideas, and one had to employ immense tact when dealing with directors and producers.Olivia de HavillandIn 1965, she became the first woman to serve as president of the Cannes Film Festival’s jury. The French government appointed her a chevalier of its Legion of Honor in 2010.U.S. President George W. Bush awarded her the National Medal of the Arts in 2008 “for her persuasive and compelling skill as an actor in roles from Shakespeare’s Hermia to Margaret Mitchell’s Melanie. Her independence, integrity, and grace won creative freedom for herself and her fellow film actors.”Although de Havilland retired from acting in 1988, she still made occasional public appearances to commemorate her films and career. As one of the only surviving stars of “Gone with the Wind,” she often attended anniversary celebrations of the classic film. She was met with a standing ovation when she introduced a presentation of previous Oscar winners at the 75th anniversary of the Academy Awards in 2003.“There have also been tributes and similar occasions that have called me back to Hollywood,” she said in 2015. “I’ve returned so often, I almost feel that I’ve never left.”Before she turned 100, she said that she hoped to live to 110. She remained in good health in her later years, regularly taking the stairs at her home in Paris and doing The New York Times crossword puzzle. At the peak of her stardom, de Havilland had several famous Hollywood romances, including with business mogul Howard Hughes, actor Jimmy Stewart and director John Huston. She married and divorced twice, first to American screenwriter and novelist Marcus Aurelius Goodrich. Their son, Benjamin, died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1991.She is survived by her daughter, Gisele, from her second marriage to French journalist Pierre Galante.

Get the latest on coronavirus. Sign up to the Daily Brief for news, explainers, how-tos, opinion and more.In the UK alone, more than 45,500 people have lost their lives to Covid-19. At the height of the coronavirus crisis, the country was reporting the deaths of more than 900 people a day in hospitals. But behind each one of these numbers is a person – someone with a family, friends and a life story to be told. Three families have shared tributes with HuffPost UK to the loved ones they have lost during the pandemic.Amrik Singh “Fiercely independent” Amrik Singh, 89, was one of the fittest people his grandson Paman knew.Getting up at 5.30am every day to drive himself to the gym, when he fell ill and tested positive for Covid-19, his family were optimistic about his recovery.Amrik arrived in the UK from rural Punjab, India, when he was 33.After working as a builder in Kent, he was offered the chance to open a paper shop in Glasgow’s West End, where he built his new life.  A dad-of-seven, grandfather of 22 and later a great-grandfather, Amrik returned to his home country every year to help run eye clinics, arranging ophthalmic treatment for those in abject poverty. He returned from his last trip to the Punjab on March 13, 10 days before the UK government announced its plans for lockdown. Concerned about the long journey he had just been on and his potential vulnerability because of his age, Amrik agreed he would live with his daughter in Birmingham for the coming weeks.Despite “following all the guidance, doing everything he was supposed to”, he fell ill on April 10. Two days later, he was in hospital. And less than a fortnight after that, his grandchildren read him the Sikh version of the last rites as he lay in his hospital bed.“He was a tremendous charitable man, an excellent athlete, a dedicated server of humanity in general and I don’t know how he fitted it all in,” Paman, an employment lawyer, told HuffPost UK. “He also doted on every single family member – and he had a very big family.“At the eye camps he helped to co-ordinate, he would talk to patients who had never been in a hospital before and were scared. He would change their sheets, help them to the toilet after their operations. “He also sponsored a programme to help young girls in India who were abandoned by their families because they were female, paying for their care and education. We had no idea he had even done that, because he didn’t tell anyone. He just wanted to help people.”One day while running his paper shop, Amrik was racially abused by a customer, who was then immediately involved in a car accident outside. Despite what had happened just minutes earlier, the shopkeeper drove him to the hospital.“He actually became one of that man’s best friends,” Paman said. In hospital, when Amrik’s health began to fail, his granddaughter – a doctor – was allowed to see him for 15 minutes, wearing full personal protective equipment. “We were able to do one last video call with everyone in the family,” Paman said. “My sister was with him when he quietly slipped away. “The medical staff were amazing – they couldn’t have done any more. On the day he died, at about 3am, I couldn’t sleep. I called the ward and one of the nurses gave me her personal mobile phone number so I could speak to him.  They were so kind.”Paman said his grandfather was his best friend, and acted more like a big brother even in his later years. Thread on my grandfather who passed away due to Covid-19 this afternoon. 1/ Sorry to post this, but it’s important we do not simply see statistics and remember the human impact. I am utterly heartbroken, my grandfather was admitted to hospital last Sunday with symptoms pic.twitter.com/cU9GMnzcD7— Paman Singh (@PamanSingh) April 22, 2020He now plans to set up a foundation in Glasgow in his memory, helping the most vulnerable. “He was so full of fun. We both used to get dressed up in suits and go into expensive car dealerships, just so he could test drive the cars,” he said.“I am just glad he left us with memories of his brilliance, and that he didn’t lose his independence.“The last thing he said to me was ‘whatever you do, make sure you don’t stop helping people’.  His last thoughts were of others, which just sums up the man he was.” Sheila Taylor “If I had to describe my mum in three words, I would say: kind, strong and lovely,” said Denise Hinshelwood. Her mum Sheila Taylor died on March 23 aged 82 after developing Covid-19. Her family has been told she was one of the first people in Wales to die with the virus. But while Sheila’s death was tragic and hard for her family to bear – especially for Leonard, her husband of 63 years – it’s the happy times that her daughter Denise cherishes. “She was funny, my mum,” said Denise. “She was also quite fiery – her sisters always used to say: ‘If ever we were in trouble, we would always call for our Sheila, she’d sort it.’”Sheila – whose maiden name was Powell – was born in Cwmbran, Wales, in 1937. She was one of nine children. After leaving school, she worked in a variety of jobs – in an office, in a pharmacy and in the town’s biscuit factory. But it was at a dance in St Gabriel’s Church that she met her husband Leonard, who she married when she was 21. The couple went on two have two children together.“When my mum and dad were younger, they were social butterflies,” Denise said. “They loved point-to-point horse racing and going to Ascot.“In the 60s, my mum’s door was always open – every Christmas morning, everybody would come to her house. “They would all start drinking at silly-o’clock in the morning, mind, and we might not have lunch at 1pm – but we would always have lunch eventually.” Denise added: “But she could have her moments – we weren’t the Brady Bunch!  “If Dad said no, you could always say: ‘Please, dad’. Dad was the softie. “But if mum said no, it was no, and dare you do any different. If you answered back all those years ago, you would have to run up those stairs a bit quick! She had really strong morals – no meant no, and that was it.” But in her old age – which Sheila dedicated to looking after Leonard, who developed Parkinson’s disease – she got a lot softer, Denise said. “She wasn’t as fiery. I used to say: ‘You’re mellowing now, mum.’ And she would say: ‘Don’t you be fooled.’” At the start of 2020, Sheila became ill, developing cellulitis and then sepsis. And when she returned home from hospital, having beaten the infections, that Denise realised her mum still wasn’t well.  “I came in and my mum was sat on the side of the sofa,” she said. “She just looked so dreadful and she was slumped to one side. I said: ‘Mum, what’s the matter?’ but she was really confused.” Denise assumed that the infections her mum had been fighting in hospital had returned. “At that time, we didn’t hear of Covid here. It was still abroad,” she said. “I rang the ambulance and they took her back in. She certainly wasn’t swabbed for anything and Covid was the last thing in our mind – it was in other countries at that point.” It was only a few days later that Sheila was tested for coronavirus and Denise was told she would have to wear a mask and gloves when visiting her mum. “They rang me the next afternoon and said that my mum had tested positive for Covid. I couldn’t believe it. They told me she had been moved to the Covid ward.” The hospital later told Denise all they could do for her mum was to make her more comfortable. “I said: ‘Have you got the right person? Are you sure you’re talking about my mum?’ Because I knew what they meant when they said giving her something to make her more comfortable.” Denise and her son rushed to the hospital to see her mum. “They wouldn’t let my husband in because they had closed the hospital at that point,” she said. “We went onto this Covid ward – I’ve never seen anything… It was the most awful thing I had ever seen in my life.” While Sheila had been told she had the virus, because she had been in and out of hospital, she didn’t understand how severe the situation really was, Denise said. “My mum told me to take her stuff home. She said: ‘I’m coming home tomorrow, promise you will come and get me.’” When it was time to leave, Denise told Sheila: “‘Bye mum, I love you lots.’ And she said: ‘Love you too, see you in the morning.’”A couple of days later, Denise received the news her mum had passed away. In the summer, Denise’s father also died, from a non-Covid related illness. Denise said she wanted to pay tribute to her mum after coronavirus and social-distancing rules robbed her and her family from having a proper funeral. With tens of thousands of people having died from Covid-19 in the UK, it can feel like your loved one is just a number, Denise said. “Nobody on the news ever said: “Mrs Jones down the road has died,” “Mrs Smith down the lane”. It was like they were just forgotten, like they were a number. “That’s how I felt my mother was. The 16th person. No, my mother wasn’t the 16th person – her name was Sheila and she was a mother and a grandmother and a great grandmother and somebody’s wife and somebody’s daughter. She’s not just a number.” Jennifer Mortimer The things Emily Webb-Mortimer remembers best about her grandmother – who died in March after contracting Covid-19 – are “fairies, roses and Shakespeare”.  Jennifer Mortimer – nee Gibson – was born into “pretty humble Cockney beginnings” in the 1930s.  During her youth in London she met the famous British playwright Harold Pinter, becoming the only permanent female member of his legendary Hackney Gang, Emily said. “She would always sing us these old Cockney songs. Her favourite was one that ended every chorus with: ‘I can’t marry you today, my wife won’t let me.’ She would put on her old Cockney accent to do it.” After going to Canada as a young woman to become a teacher, Jennifer met her first husband and had a daughter. She came back to London after getting a divorce, becoming a socialite in Soho, Emily said. “She met my grandfather, James, in one of the more famous Soho bars, called The French, in 1957 or 1958. My grandfather and his roommate were taking bets as to whether she was actually Ava Gardner.” The pair went on to marry and have three children. “My grandmother lived for her family,” Emily said. “My grandfather was a photographer and she would be his assistant – she even modelled for him, as did my dad and his sisters.” The couple separated in the 1980s. It was from her grandmother that Emily developed her love of Shakespeare – especially A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  “When I was eight, she gave me a ‘My First Shakespeare’ book and from then on I was obsessed. She performed a lot of Shakespeare back when she wanted to be an actress and her favourite role was Titania.” Titania is the queen of the fairies in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  “I grew up in the countryside, so whenever she visited she would take me and my brothers on long country walks and tell us to look in the bushes in case we could see any fairies playing.” Jennifer’s flat in Great Portland Street was the “most incredible flat in the world” for her grandchildren. “I would marvel at her oppressive collection of books, which covered half the walls in the house, and try on her massive motorcycle helmets,” Emily said. Walls that didn’t have bookcases were decorated with art and “beautiful photos” of her children. “The flat was like her – vibrant, full of life, beautiful and smelling of roses. She always wore rose perfume.” It was when Emily was a young girl that her grandmother was diagnosed with dementia. When she was 13, Jennifer went to live in a care home. “Towards the end, she couldn’t speak or move, save for her head. But sometimes she was lucid and you knew she was really listening to what you were saying,” Emily – now a 20-year-old student – said. “I always tried to thank her, to let her know how much she meant to me in those moments.” On her 87th birthday, on March 11, Jennifer was rushed into hospital with laboured breathing.  “We were told she wouldn’t last the night,” Emily said. “But she lasted another week, which didn’t surprise anyone.“She was one of the strongest people in the whole world.” Related... Staffing startups like Wonolo, Instawork, and Jitjatjo run apps that help temp workers find gigs at places that frequently need extra hands, like restaurants, warehouses, and hotels. Many of these startups are experiencing turbulent times as COVID-19 kills demand from their customers in industries that are affected by government shutdown orders, or by patrons' fears of  exposure to the virus. Wonolo CEO Yong Kim said business initially fell during the pandemic, but a boost in demand for essential businesses stabilized his company. These companies also struggle with a business model that requires sending temporary staffers from workplace to workplace while public health guidelines recommend minimizing contact with large numbers of other people. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Apps that match temp workers with short-staffed businesses like restaurants, hotels, and warehouses made up a burgeoning tech category before the coronavirus outbreak started erupting in the United States. Now, the startups that created those apps may be living or dying along with the businesses they serve. "Business has been tough," said Thor Wood, CEO of SnapShyft, which matches workers with open shifts at restaurants and hotels in the Midwest. Staffing startups serve a range of industries that rely on temp workers to fill shifts when business spikes past normal capacity, or permanent workers are out sick. Restaurants, hotels, and warehouses all use these platforms. Contract workers tap the staffing apps to pick up shifts washing dishes, laundering clothing, moving crates, or performing a host of other chores. For staffing startups that assist businesses affected by government closure orders to fight the pandemic, the downturn in demand has been devastating. "Business for us has dipped to the lowest of the lows," said Tim Chatfield, CEO of Jitjatjo, a New York City-based startup that services the metro area's vaunted dining scene.  "We were on a trajectory to rapidly scale geographically," Chatfield said. "We've pulled that all back at the moment." Now Chatfield runs Jitjatjo via video chats from a "command center" in his apartment's bedroom. His bed is hidden by a black curtain, and a custom purple neon sign hangs over his head, reading "#hirehospitality." He keeps a TV running nearby so he can stay on top of the headlines, as the future of his company rides on the latest news updates about the spread of the virus and local health regulations dictating whether his employees can work or not. "We're dealing with something that is really, really tough in that the knowledge around it is evolving on an hourly basis," Chatfield said. "And we've got people spread out across multiple markets, each with different rules." But as closure orders have demolished demand for temp workers from some businesses, demand from others has skyrocketed. Wonolo CEO Yong Kim said that although business started to get rocky in the early stages of the pandemic, the surge in demand from some of his client businesses brought Wonolo close to its pre-pandemic customer growth expectations. Wonolo has a more diversified clientele than some of its rivals. "Think about all the supply chain businesses that are in the supply chain, or logistics-related for consumers," Kim said. "Grocery stores that need stock, courier services that deliver goods, or ecommerce companies that provide online goods or services." Companies that dispatch temporary staffers must grapple with the fact that their core business activity can run contrary to current public health guidance on slowing the spread of coronavirus. Far from limiting contact, these startups send staffers from one workplace to another, exposing them to large numbers of people and various indoor environments. "There's lots of reasons food workers could be at high risk," said Peter Dooley, an industrial hygienist with the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health. "Restaurant work involves typically close, small spaces… also, restaurant and food work involves a lot of people-to-people contact. A lot of interactions with people, whether it be customers or coworkers or management or whoever." Startups have responded to these risks by furnishing workers with safety information. SnapShyft has sent CDC guidance and changes in local mandates through app alerts. Wonolo has created educational courses for its workers. And Jitjatjo, which actually employs its 10,000-strong workforce, is offering two weeks of paid sick leave for workers who catch the virus. "We've only been made aware of two cases of positive results [of COVID-19]," Jitjatjo's Chatfield said, "Which is phenomenal considering we employ over 10,000 people." Wood said he worries that even after business closure orders lift, workers will hesitate to continue using the apps out of fear for their own safety. "The workers might have PPE, but there's no guarantee that the guests do or that they're going to abide by the rules," Wood said. "I've seen it firsthand where you've got some businesses and some groups of people that are adhering to the mask rules and social distancing, and others that are on a different planet." Here are some of the leading startups in the staffing app industry: Pared San Francisco-based Pared was launched in 2015 and now operates in cities on both coasts and the midwest. Unlike many other apps in the same category, Pared focuses exclusively on finding shifts for food workers. Pared has been used by local restaurants and big names like Pizza Hut and McDonalds.  Instawork Instawork is often cast as a competitor to Pared. Both launched in San Francisco in 2015 and now operate in cities across the country. But unlike Pared, Instawork helps workers find shifts in industries outside of food-related work, including warehouse gigs and delivery jobs. SnapShyft Indianapolis-based SnapShyft was founded in 2016 and now provides shifts for food and event workers. The startup opened a second office in San Francisco last year to recruit top talent. Wonolo The Bay Area's Wonolo was founded in 2013, an early entry in the category. Wonolo helps businesses find temp workers for  a broad range of services, including warehouse work, food production, cleaning, and administrative positions. Wonolo claims high-profile corporate clients like Coca-Cola, Papa Johns, and fashion retailer Uniqlo. Jitjatjo New York City-based Jitjatjo was founded in 2016 and connects workers to shifts at the city's restaurants. Unlike many other startups in this category, Jitjatjo's more than 10,000 workers are employees of the company, not contractors. CEO Tim Chatfield said that business has been way down since the pandemic hit New York City. Jitjattjo has since pivoted to offering disinfection services. Shiftgig Chicago's Shiftgig was founded in 2012 and first focused on connecting local businesses to temp workers before transforming into a SaaS business that helps staffing agency employees find gigs. Shiftgig is used by national staffing agencies including LGC Hospitality and The Job Center. Qwick Qwick was founded in 2017 in Scottsdale, Arizona and has expanded to eight major cities across the country, including Phoenix, Dallas, San Diego, Atlanta, and New York City. Qwick is focused on finding shifts for food workers and event caterers. Join the conversation about this story » NOW WATCH: Why Pikes Peak is the most dangerous racetrack in America
