Among other things, those people said, Apple s newest phones will maintain the current 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays. The Lightning connector will serve double-duty as a port for charging the phone and for connecting headphones, they said.An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. The introduction of larger-display phones in 2014 triggered a surge in sales, with iPhone sales rising 37% in the fiscal year ending September 2015.Horace Dediu, founder of Asymco, an independent analysis firm focused on the mobile industry, said many consumers buy new phones when they are due for an upgrade under the terms of their wireless plan, without much concern for new features or design changes. The current design ideas for the 2017 iPhones are expected to push the handsets in that direction by eliminating much of the bezel around the display with the OLED screen.
The Mariana Trench is the deepest spot in the the world's oceans and it s home to some strange sights, sounds, and creatures. At over 10,000 metres deep, the Mariana Trench is one of the most remote — and mysterious — places on Earth. We ve only just begun to get a look at the unusual ocean life living down there, and what we ve seen so far seems utterly alien. That makes finding out that is already heavily polluted all the more disappointing.Earlier this month, University of Oxford researchers finally gave up on their quest to find a single still pristine spot anywhere on this Earth, saying that it simply didn t believe one existed anymore. It looks like, even 10 kilometres below the seas, they were right.

According to the freshly issued Top500 list which ranks the speediest supercomputers, the new Sunway TaihuLight has completely blown away the old number one system, which was Tianhe-2 – a name you may well be familiar with because it's been top for some time. And the big thing for China is that this new supercomputer goliath was built using processors made in its home country, as opposed to Tianhe-2 which used Intel hardware.Sunway TaihuLight was developed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology and is installed at China's National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi.Previous to this current list, Tianhe-2 was top dog for the last six lists running in other words, the last three years, as the rankings are issued twice yearly .The leading country in Europe is Germany with 26 supercomputers, followed by France which has 18, and then the UK on 12.The world of supercomputers aside, yesterday we saw a 1000-core processor built by the University of California, Davis, which in itself is remarkable because it's claimed to be the most energy-efficient 'many-core' processor ever seen.

Earlier this month, Tribune Publishing Co., a 168-year-old newspaper publisher that s been home to the Los Angeles Times, the Baltimore Sun and Chicago Tribune, changed its name to tronc.I didn t mistype, that s what the company decided to go with, and it really is all lowercase. So what does it have in mind for its mission to take over the world? From the employee video above which went live today, it seems like tronc wants to confuse people with a high bpm that s buzzwords per minute statement that s impossible to make sense of.It s hard to tell if this a spoof – if it is, it s probably one of the best bits of satire in 2016.If not, well, it s clear that every other news publisher can pack up and go home, cause tronc has this journalism thing all figured out.
Tech and water aren't always the best of friends, with liquid having an annoying tendency to fry electronics.Perhaps that's why fitness trackers aimed primarily at swimmers seem far less common than those designed to track runners and cyclists, but it hasn't stopped Misfit, which has followed up its original Speedo Shine with the nattily-named Speedo Shine 2.The name might bring to mind shiny trunks, but the actual device is a more conventional fitness band with an aluminum face.Available for £89.99 around US$132/AU$177 the Misfit Speedo Shine 2 is designed to work with all stroke types, can track your lap count and link up to the Misfit app to show your swim distance and calories burned, or the Speedo Fit app for more in-depth details of your swimming skills.Water workoutObviously you're not going to be taking your phone into the pool with you, but it's more than just a shiny bracelet while you're swimming, with lights and vibrations to give you an indication of your progress and provide text message and missed call notifications. While it's clearly aimed at swimmers it's got a place on your wrist even on dry land, as the Speedo Shine 2 can also track walking, running, cycling and sleep, or be used as a remote control for music, taking selfies, smart lights and other smart home devices.
Samsung wants to be among the top three players in the 5G mobile networks businessSamsung is looking to grab a top-three slot in the 5G mobile networks business by making a quick move into markets like the US.Among others, South Korea and Japan are also working hard to deploy 5G.The International Telecommunication Union ITU has already started working on the definition of 5G networks, scheduled to go commercial by 2020.The company wants to partner with Verizon for the commercialisation of the technology.Verizon is planning to conduct field tests before the technology is deployed on home broadbands in the US by 2017."The network equipment business is a B2B business where the barrier to entry is high," said CJ Heo, fund manager at Alpha Asset management.

A new research system using China-built chips is more than four times as powerful as the US top machineChina has maintained its leading position in the TOP500 list of the world s most powerful supercomputers, a role it has held for the past three years – this time taking the lead with a system built entirely of chips designed and manufactured within the country. The list underscores China s rapidly developing industrial and research activities and its drive to compete on an even footing with the rest of the world in computing, TOP500 said. The system, designed by the National Research Centre of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology NRCPC , uses more than 10.5 million locally made computing cores comprising 40,960 nodes, runs on a Linux-based operating system and is installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi, near Shanghai on China s east coast.Tianhe-2, an Intel-based system that has held the top spot on the past six bi-annual rankings, is now No.Leapfrogging US performanceChina s investment into high-performance computing was spurred by the US Commerce Department s ban last year on the sale of Intel chips to some parts of China, and the result is that the country s supercomputer development has accelerated much faster than that in the US, according to TOP500 editor Jack Dongarra.3 rank with 17.59 petaflop/s and the rest of the top 10 is made up of machines from Japan, Switzerland, Germany and Saudi Arabia.
Many people use GoToMyPC to obtain remote access to home and work computers via a web browser. The global password reset comes soon after a separate attack on another remote access system that also re-used passwords stolen elsewhere."We apologise for the frustration this issue is causing," it said.A status report on the GoToMyPC website that said the site was hard to reach suggested many people had been trying to change their password following news of the attack.Earlier this month, many users of the TeamViewer remote access software reported they had been hit by attackers who used login credentials found in massive dumps of login data sold and shared online."Re-using passwords at multiple sites is a bad idea to begin with, but re-using your GoToMyPC remote administrator password at other sites seems like an exceptionally lousy idea," said security expert Brian Krebs in a blogpost analysing the attack.
The ongoing fight between regulators and on-demand giants Uber and Airbnb just took a new twist.A group of mayors from 10 cities across the world have joined together and resolved to write one unified book of rules dictating how on-demand platforms should operate in their jurisdictions, Bloomberg reported. The mayors, who hail from cities including New York, Paris, Seoul, Athens, Barcelona and Toronto, met for the first time in Amsterdam last month, and may have a set of rules ready by October, according to Bloomberg.Sparks have been flying in recent months between these companies and the cities that try to regulate them.Home-sharing site Airbnb and car-hailing app Uber have become massively popular almost overnight, and local laws have struggled to keep up amid claims that Airbnb is driving up rent prices, or that Uber is putting taxi drivers out of business.Uber and Lyft recently shut down operations in Austin after the city required drivers to undergo fingerprint background checks, and Uber has threatened to pull out of Houston for the same reason.Tension is mounting in the Bay Area as well.In San Francisco, which requires Airbnb landlords to register with the city, approved tougher rules earlier this month — now Airbnb will face fines if it posts listings for landlords that haven t complied. This means focusing regulations on genuine public-interest objectives  —  like data-driven safety and consumer protection initiatives — without making it too difficult for people who want to work flexibly from doing so.Photo: Foot traffic streams past Uber offices on Market Street in San Francisco in 2014.

There is more to the competitive landscape in Sweden and Europe have intensified. In addition to watching for companies to invest in on-site, much of his work focused on helping Creandums portfolio companies to step into the US - and identify potential buyers and investors for the later stages. If we get some time to pitch when pitching we are as good as any other. The spearhead is as good in the Nordic region, especially the serial entrepreneurs who have made trips before. Business Angels on the other hand, that is, individuals who invest in young technology companies, could potentially be more dangerous to live. If you invest only in two companies, you will not play in those ten, I talked about earlier, which means that the risk is much greater.

Shanghai could be the production hub for a $9 billion USD Tesla hub, according to sources who spoke to Bloomberg.A company owned by the Shanghai government, Jinqiao Group, has reportedly signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the U.S.-based electric vehicle maker, said the source. The deal would involve an investment of 30 billion yuan $4.5 billion USD from both Tesla and Jinqiao, totaling $9 billion USD.A majority of Jinqiao s investment would be in securing the land for the facility, according to the report.Jinqiao s listed entity, Shanghai Jinqiao Processing Zone Development Co., saw their stock jump almost 10 percent following the news, before trading was suspended.Tesla released their Model X for distribution in China just last week. The country hasn t been an easy market for Tesla, though it s expected to be the largest global market for connected, autonomous and electric vehicles.Several home-grown competitors have inched into the space, including NextEV and internet company LeEco, which is backing Faraday Future.Bloomberg s source claims that several cities are vying to partner with Tesla on the project, including Suzhou in Jinagsu province and Hefei in Anhui province.Recently Baidu announced that they would be testing their autonomous vehicles in Anhui province, due to the varied landscapes and favorable government conditions.

However, he adds, iPhone 7 production should now be underway and a definitive answer could appear from the supply chain next month.Rumours that Apple will drop the port on the iPhone 7, which is expected to be released in September, have been doing the rounds for months. As TrustedReviews points out, noted smartphone leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer says Apple has already begun to manufacture the 4.7ins iPhone 7.A physical button is a part susceptible to breaking, says Mobipicker, and given that new iPhones now have a fingerprint scanner embedded into the button, replacing it can be costly. However, it's strongly rumoured that this year's iPhone won't represent a major design overhaul compared to the Phone 6 generation and that Apple is waiting until 2017 to unleash a heavily revised device, marking ten years since the iPhone's introduction. The lack of images of the front means a home button change this September isn't "completely implausible".

Samsung intends to spend $1.2 billion on IoT research and development in the U.S. over the next four yearsSamsung's Artik 10 developer board can be a PC replacement, or be used to make drones, robots and gadgets. That's what Samsung Electronics is counting on as it draws up a four-year plan to invest US$1.2 billion in U.S. IoT startups and research. The company sees the Internet of things as a way to provide dementia care and to help millions of elderly people live independently, using a range of devices including some akin to fitness trackers."We can keep people out of hospitals and nursing homes," Samsung CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon said at a company event in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.By making home heating controls more efficient, among other things, IoT technologies could reduce global carbon emissions by 9 gigatons annually, he said.Slowing climate change may not excite his U.S. audience much, but another of his suggestions could, particularly in Silicon Valley: Building a network of sensors to provide early warning of earthquakes, and use the information to protect critical infrastructure, for instance by shutting off gas lines.
Nest Labs announced on Tuesday a new feature of its Nest Thermostat that enables homeowners to take better advantage of energy providers Time of Use rate plans.Dubbed Time of Savings, the new feature will automatically adjust the thermostat so that less electricity is consumed to heat or cool the home while energy prices are the highest. Some regulatory agencies, including the California Public Utilities Commission, are mandating that energy providers implement such plans in order to encourage conservation, thereby reducing strain on the electrical grid. The thermostat will display a green gear icon when Time of Savings is active, and this information will also be displayed in the energy history report that Nest provides to its customers.Nest says it s also working with Southern California Edison to bring Time of Savings to that utility s customers. Why this matters: The competition has already aped most of Nest s thermostat design innovations, so initiatives like Time of Savings and Nest s earlier Seasonal Savings and Rush Hour Rewards programs are the best means the company has of differentiating its products.

At the end of April, Microsoft revealed a preview of Flow, an automation tool that connects productivity apps and triggers actions between them, similar to IFTTT and Zapier. When it launched, Flow was only available on the Web.There s also a feed that shows you a history of all your Flow actions. It works with Office 365, SharePoint, and 34 other apps like Salesforce CRM, Slack, GitHub, Twitter, Google Drive and MailChimp. But if you use a wider range of apps and want more flexibility for things like controlling your smart home gadgets and saving Reddit posts to Pocket, you ll want to give Zapier or IFTTT a go.TechCrunch notes that Microsoft is building more features for its new service, including the ability to create flows through the app.
Nothing in this demo will be in the final game, and some of the settings here are borrowed from Capcom s earlier, equally terrifying, Kitchen VR demo.Again, playing the game on your TV, this doll might be a mild annoyance, or even go entirely unnoticed. That is, of course, until one of the team goes missing.Of course, nobody creates a sense of unbarring helplessness like Capcom, and returning home to play the PS Plus version of the demo, I still never get out alive.Japanese developers are often criticised for sticking rigidly to a well-trodden path, but Capcom must be applauded for taking a direction nobody could have foreseen. If the game takes a similar direction to the concept demo, we could be in store for an incredible experience.
