Pubs, bars and restaurants across England will be subject to a 10pm curfew from Thursday – but will it actually help slow the spread of Covid-19?The latest announcement follows curfews in the north-east of England and parts of Wales. Unfortunately, it’s too early to see if those curfews have been effective. On Friday, Professor Eugene Milne, Newcastle’s public health director, explained there’s always a lag in results and residents in the north-east should expect cases to rise  for “the next week or maybe two”. He added that we could be well into October before we see signs of a positive response. Professor Paul Hunter, an infectious diseases expert and professor in Medicine at University of East Anglia, says in general, there’s a “lack of any real evidence” on the impact of curfews on epidemics. “I did find one paper that suggested some benefit, but was not at all impressed by their analytical approach,” he tells HuffPost UK.The move towards curfews, therefore, is largely based on scientists’ predictions of what might happen. READ MORE: Here’s How Coronavirus Curfews Will Work “I guess it depends on what effect a curfew has on behaviour,” adds Prof. Hunter. “Are people going to go out earlier in the evening and still spend the same amount of time out as they would, or would it lead to less time out? If the latter, then there would be some value as risk is dependant on the number and proximity of people you are with and the time you spend with them.”A curfew could also lead to some consuming less alcohol, adds Prof. Hunter – although again, there’s a lack of evidence that 10pm is the magic number. “If it leads to less alcohol consumption and less drunkenness, then maybe people would be better at social distancing,” he adds.Dr Julian Tang, an honorary associate professor of Respiratory Sciences at theUniversity of Leicester, is a little more hopeful about the effectiveness of curfews, though. “Curfews can be effective if people adhere to them to reduce the contact frequency between those who are still susceptible,” he tells HuffPost UK. “If you have six friends of whom four decide to obey the curfew and two don’t – this is better than none of them obeying the curfew.”It also comes down to the fact the risk of transmission is higher during prolonged interactions, as opposed to fleeting interactions, Dr Tang adds.  READ MORE: What We Know About The Long-Term Impact Of 'Mild' Covid-19 “If the friends above choose to meet after school but can only meet for one hour instead of two hours before the curfew kicks in, then the risk of transmission may be reduced – though transmission is likely to be relatively quick at typical face-to-face conversational level,” he says.  “Again, all the interventions are incrementally beneficial. If there is a rule in place, some will choose to follow it and can reduce their contact frequency/duration to some extent, compared to if no rules are in place.”Dr Nilu Ahmed, a lecturer in Social Sciences at the University of Bristol, also believes curfews will be effective as they will act as a reminder to people that we are still in the midst of a pandemic. “As people drink more and as people get past that point, usually after about 10pm, that social distancing goes out of the window,” she previously told HuffPost UK. “Even if you’re not a drinker or you’re a mild drinker, it’s about getting too comfortable. As soon as you’re back in that familiar space, you start to go back to our old habits.”If handled the wrong way, some scientists have raised concerns that curfews could actually cause interactions and transmissions to increase. Timothy Sly, an epidemiologist and professor emeritus at Ryerson University, previously told Global News that curfews can force people together at earlier times. He gave the example of Victoria, Australia, where an 8pm curfew was  imposed – including shopping for groceries. “People that would be at the grocery store are forced to go home, but they still need to get their food. Instead of going later, between 8pm and 10pm, for example, they now have to go in the middle of the afternoon with everybody else,” he said. “You’ve got an increase in density of people during the rest of the day simply because you’ve told everybody go home.”We won’t know if the UK curfews have made things better or worse for several weeks – but let’s hope it doesn’t lead to a rush of visitors for the new, earlier, last orders. READ MORE: 6 Months Of Working From Home Has Divided Us Into Lovers And Haters Government U-Turns On 'Return To Office' Guidance Are Glasses Wearers Less Likely To Catch Covid-19?

Will coronavirus be the Grinch that stole Christmas? It’s one of the many questions on everyone’s lips, following the new Covid-19 restrictions. On Wednesday, the government confirmed that gatherings of more than six people will be illegal across England from Monday September 14 – with a few exemptions, such as events for work or education, some sporting events, and guest-limited weddings and funerals. In Wednesday’s Downing Street briefing, Boris Johnson was asked directly if these restrictions mean Christmas has been cancelled. “I’m still hopeful, as I’ve said before, that in many ways we could be able to get some aspects of our lives back to normal by Christmas,” he said. Yet chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said the latest restrictions will be here for a while. “In terms of the existing restrictions, people should see this as the next block of time,” he said. “That may not last many months, but it is very unlikely to  be over  in just two or three weeks.” Government insiders have also told HuffPost UK restrictions could be in place until spring 2021. Related... Boris Johnson's Tough New Covid Curbs Could Last Until Spring The comments follow Matt Hancock’s interview on BBC Radio 1′s Newsbeat programme. When asked how long the new law would be in place, Hancock said “for the foreseeable future”, adding this could mean beyond Christmas.“I’d like to be able to relax them before Christmas, obviously,” said Hancock, but when pushed to clarify if families will be able to celebrate together by then, he acknowledged: “Not necessarily.” In July, Muslim families across the north-west of England were forced to change or cancel long-awaited Eid celebrations with just hours’ notice when new lockdown rules were imposed.Looking ahead to Christmas 2020, HuffPost UK asked three experts for their predictions, and although each said it’s too early to say for certain, it doesn’t look good.“Christmas will not be the same – of that I am absolutely sure,” says Sally Bloomfield, honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “To what extent Christmas may be cancelled depends on us right now.”READ MORE: Everything You Need To Know About Ban On Social Gatherings Over Six Given the current increase in UK Covid-19 cases, all three experts believe the six-person rule will be in place for some time, with the possibility of restrictions being extended further.  “The re-opening of schools and the shedding and seeding of the virus more widely in the population leading up to Christmas will make ongoing, leap-frogging, Covid-19 outbreaks more likely,” says Dr Julian Tang, consultant virologist and honorary associate professor, at the University of Leicester.Christmas day (and the lazy period afterwards) doesn’t pose a big problem in itself, he adds. It’s the run-up that’s the issue.  “In the UK – unlike in Asia where everything is open and people go out a lot – Christmas is mostly a home and family affair – almost like a voluntary, self-imposed lockdown for a few days,” he says. “However, the main risk is likely the pre-Christmas shopping days and the festive spirit that this creates.” READ MORE: Is It Safe For Grandparents To Look After Their Grandkids Right Now? Dr Tang’s concern is we’ll begin to relax social distancing behaviours if we’re going to crowded shopping malls and sipping mulled wine in packed pubs. “Shopping online for Christmas is safer but much less atmospheric and festive, so may not be so popular,” he says. Although some universities are conducting lectures online until 2021, Prof. Bloomfield is concerned about the impact of many students returning home from campus. “They’ll have Christmas parties and then they’ll come home and spread out across the country and spread the virus elsewhere,” she says. “It just doesn’t really bear thinking about.” Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine and expert in infectious diseases at the University of East Anglia, is a little more optimistic.Christmas is a religious festival and will never be formally “cancelled”, points out Prof. Hunter, but we may need to celebrate it in more intimate ways this year. Judging by the current trajectory, the next peak infection rate could be December to January, he adds.“The big office work parties and things like that almost certainly won’t be happening in my view, which some people might breath a sigh of relief at,” he says. READ MORE: 13 Tips For Staying Covid-Safe As We Start Socialising More Indoors In Wednesday’s Downing Street briefing, Boris Johnson confirmed that “Covid-secure venues,” such as places of worship, would be exempt from the six-person rule. Even if church ceremonies do go ahead as usual at Christmas, “the big issue about churches is the age distribution,” says Prof. Hunter.“Most people who attend tend to be quite old, on average. It’s quite plausible that the government may recommend shielding again at some point, probably sooner rather than later, I would guess,” he adds. “Even if church services can go ahead, it may be the case that three quarters of the congregation can’t turn up because they’re supposed to be shielding.”Schools still might be open, adds Prof. Hunter,  “but the typical school nativity play probably won’t happen”. “Schools won’t be getting loads of parents into a hall to watch their children pretend to be shepherds,” he says. Of course, if the six-person rule is still in place, multi-household meals won’t be happening. Even if restrictions ease, granny might need to stay home. “Covid-19 can be more severe in older populations,” says Dr Tang. “So, sadly, multi-generational family gatherings may be potentially less safe and may need to be avoided.”  A vaccine may be available by Christmas, says Prof. Bloomfield, adding a glimmer of hope. But the chances of it being rolled out nationally by December are slim.  “It will take many, many months to produce enough vaccine to produce what we call ‘heard immunity’,”  she says. “There might be enough for those at highest risks –  healthcare workers and people in extremely vulnerable groups – but to produce population herd immunity by Christmas, from what I’ve heard, is not a possibility.” READ MORE: The UK's Drinking Problem Got Worse Under Lockdown. The first Thursday of September has long been known as “Super Thursday” in UK publishing: the day in the calendar when the largest number of new titles hit the shelves, with booksellers hoping to entice readers hunkering down for autumn with a cup of tea and a good book. Or two. Or 10.This year, no thanks to Covid-19 and months of lockdown, Super Thursday’s book pile is teetering like a Jenga tower – with all the launches that were scheduled for summer festivals and holiday reading held over and added to an already chocabloc autumn list. More than 600 hardbacks alone are being published on September 3, the Guardian reported. With so many reads to choose from, we thought we’d ask booksellers which ones have them most excited. Here’s their rundown of the class of 2020 – from debut authors to more familiar names. Just don’t forget the joys of browsing for yourself. It’s a question parents up and down the country have been asking for the past few months. Come September, all children are expected to go back – both primary and secondary. It’s now widely agreed children have a much milder experience of the virus than adults. A new study, lead by Public Health England (PHE), suggests kids in England made up just 1% of Covid-19 cases during the first wave of the pandemic, which prompted UK academics to say going back to school in September is a viable, low-risk option. For the study, researchers compared disease trends in adults and children in England between January and May 2020, and also looked at Covid-19 test result data for this period. Between 16 January and 3 May, 540,305 people, including 35,200 children under the age of 16, were tested for the virus.Around one in four (24%) of those tested had the virus. Children accounted for 1,408 of the positive results – 1% of the total. This compares with around 19-35% of adults. The highest number of tests and positive results were among infants (particularly those under three months old), and among one-year-olds. These figures are in line with those reported for children in other countries, say the researchers. What we know about children spreading the virusPrevious studies have shown 1-5% of diagnosed Covid-19 cases occur in children. However, cases among kids are thought to be largely asymptomatic, meaning they don’t show symptoms. This is a drawback of the above study. The data of cases in England is “heavily skewed”, says Professor Jonathan Ball, an expert in molecular virology at the University of Nottingham, by the fact that the only children tested were those presenting at a GP clinic with well-defined respiratory illness and fever – a.k.a symptomatic kids.“We know from other studies that children, particularly young children, show minimal symptoms of SARS2 infection and often have no symptoms at all,” he says. “Therefore, the fact that children weren’t often amongst confirmed cases of Covid-19 isn’t so surprising.”A claim is made in the study that the findings “provide further evidence against the role of children in infection and transmission of SARS-CoV-2”. But Prof Ball argues it doesn’t. “To imply children aren’t an important source of the infection isn’t really fully supported by the evidence here – the study doesn’t look at the infectiousness of children,” he says. For example, we don’t know whether asymptomatic kids were going home to their families and passing the virus around, or passing it among their peers, who were also then asymptomatic.Professor Paul Hunter, an expert in medicine at the University of East Anglia, agrees: “While it’s generally accepted children, even when infected, are unlikely to become ill with Covid-19 and very unlikely to die, this is not evidence against the role of children in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2. I don’t think the authors of this study can use their data to draw such an apparently firm conclusion.”Another study also suggests children with Covid-19 might be “silent spreaders” and play a larger role in the spread of the virus than previously thought. The study by Massachusetts General Hospital and Mass General Hospital for Children found kids of all ages infected with the virus had a significantly higher level of it in their airways than adults with Covid-19 in intensive care units.“I was surprised by the high levels of virus we found in children of all ages, especially in the first two days of infection,” says Lael Yonker, a doctor and lead author of the study. “I was not expecting the viral load to be so high. You think of a hospital, and of all of the precautions taken to treat severely ill adults, but the viral loads of these hospitalised patients are significantly lower than a ‘healthy child’ who is walking around with a high SARS-CoV-2 viral load.”So, should parents be worried? Here, we break down what we know about Covid-19 in kids of different age groups. Related... What You Can Do Now To Prepare Kids For Going Back To School Nursery school Children tend to go to nursery between the ages of one and five years old. The PHE study of Covid-19 cases among kids in England showed cases were highest in those aged one and under. There weren’t as many cases in two, three and four-year-olds in comparison. There are concerns such young children might be unknowingly spreading the virus. A separate study from a Chicago children’s hospital found children under five with “mild to moderate” Covid-19 have a higher viral load compared to older children and adults, “which may suggest greater transmission,” said lead author Taylor Heald-Sargent, a paediatric infectious diseases specialist.“This has important public health implications, especially during discussions on the safety of reopening schools and daycare.”The findings, published in the journal JAMA Paediatrics, point to the possibility that younger children transmit the virus as much as other age groups.Younger children’s ability to spread Covid-19 may have been under-recognised, researchers say. While the study doesn’t prove they spread Covid-19 as much as adults, “it is a possibility,” said Dr Heald-Sargent.There have been some outbreaks of the virus in nursery schools in the UK, however staff appear to have been more impacted than children, which might suggest young kids have some form of protective effect.Primary schoolIn young children attending primary school (aged four to eleven), evidence so far points to a reduced risk of becoming sick with the virus and spreading it.A large study from South Korea suggests kids under 10 years old spread the virus to others far less often than adults do. So, while they might be tested positive, they’re unlikely to transmit it to others. Another from Singapore concluded the risk of Covid-19 transmission among children in schools, especially pre-schools, is likely to be low.A study from a small town in France also points to a lower risk in primary school age children, compared to secondary school pupils. Epidemiologist Arnaud Fontanet led an investigation after schools in Crépy-en-Valois became the centre of an outbreak earlier in the year.In the secondary school, 38% of students had been infected, along with 43% of teachers and 59% of non-teaching staff. But the town’s six primary schools did not have the same experience. While three primary school age pupils caught Covid-19, not one of these infections had led to a secondary case, the Guardian reported, and only 9% of primary school pupils, 7% of teachers and 4% of non-teaching staff were infected.“These results showed us teenagers are just as contagious as adults. But in the younger age groups, it’s a different story. They do not seem to transmit it to the same extent,” Fontanet said.Secondary schoolThe PHE study found older children are more likely to test positive for Covid-19 than younger children, as shown in the graph below. This means secondary schools are more likely to be prone to outbreaks than primaries. As Russell Viner, Sage member and president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, told The Times: “It’s increasingly clear that older children, teenagers probably, transmit as much as adults.”Viner’s comments came after education secretary Gavin Williams revealed a study is being conducted on thousands of pupils who returned to schools in June. The findings will help determine whether it’s safe to send kids back – but they’re unlikely to be published before schools reopen, according to The Times. Secondary school pupils appear to be “more likely to get infected, have silent infection, transmit infection and get sicker,” a source close to the yet-to-be published study told The Times. Related... What Should We Still Disinfect To Prevent Covid-19? Here's What Experts Say Lead author of the PHE study on Covid-19 among children in England, Dr Shamez Ladhani, a paediatric infectious diseases specialist, says it’s not clear why young children have a low risk of infection compared to older children. One reason might be that compared to adults, children have fewer ACE2 receptors [an enzyme in the body that lets the virus into our cells] that the virus can attach to. The way the immune system reacts to the virus is also likely to be different in children compared to adults, he adds. So, should schools reopen?Independent Sage, an alternative scientific advisory group, has warned that if local cases are already high, schools reopening will act as a “super spreading event”. It recommends prioritising reopening schools over pubs and casinos, ensuring that outbreaks in schools and communities are identified quickly and acted upon rapidly, and says schools need to be provided with detailed guidance so they know how best to minimise the spread of the virus. It also makes sense for students to wear masks, the group said in a Twitter thread. Professor Adilia Warris, paediatric infectious diseases specialist at University of Exeter says the results of the main PHE study underscore that going back to school carries a “very low risk” for children. “While an increase in SARS-CoV2 infections might be seen, the current data provides strong arguments that those infections will in the vast majority of cases not lead to severe disease in pre-school and school-aged children.”Dr Sanjay Patel, a consultant in paediatric infectious diseases and immunology at Southampton Children’s Hospital, says as the study wasn’t set up to investigate the rate of transmission between children, “we need to ensure robust infection control measures remain in place in schools – especially secondary schools – and that vigilance is maintained (through test and tracing) once they reopen.”Patel agrees reopening schools in September should represent an “extremely low risk to any individual child”. But it’s important to recognise that, despite these low numbers, “children may play a role in the transmission process,” he adds. So parents and teachers with underlying health conditions may need to take precautions in order to minimise their own risk over the coming months. While children have been largely spared from the clinical effects of Covid-19, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) points out that almost every child in the country has experienced “collateral damage”. Millions have faced an unprecedented interruption in their education, and the burden of this has weighed most heavily on disadvantaged families, said RCPCH. The mental implications of keeping kids from schools should not be overlooked. There is a health risk to sending children back to school – but so far, the evidence suggests this risk is low, as children are less likely to become ill with the virus. Whether they are ‘super spreaders’ is still largely unanswered, as they could be passing the virus between themselves but remaining asymptomatic (showing no symptoms) – and tests wouldn’t pick this up.The study published later this year on how school re-openings impacted Covid-19 cases will hopefully shed some light on the subject. Until then, it’s clear that schools and teachers need to be given as much support and guidance as possible to help them run safely in the months to come.Related...
