Linda and Anne Nolan have revealed they are both receiving treatment for cancer after being diagnosed within days of each other. The siblings – who are part of the famous Nolan Sisters – have been undergoing chemotherapy together during lockdown at Blackpool’s Victoria Hospital. Anne, 69, has breast cancer, which she has been told is at stage three – the most serious being stage four. It is the second time she has been told she has breast cancer, previously being diagnosed in 2000. Just days after Anne’s diagnosis in May, Linda was told she has incurable cancer in her liver, which is the fourth time she has had the disease. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, cellulitis and lymphoedema in her arm in 2007, and secondary cancer on her pelvis in 2017, which was discovered after she broke her hip during a fall at home.The pair opened up about their fight against the disease in an interview with The Sun, where they revealed they have both lost their hair as a result of their chemo treatment. They recalled telling their sisters – Denise, Maureen and Loose Women star Coleen – of their diagnosis, with Linda, 61, saying: “We laughed and we cried really. It’s hysterical.“Forget the Chemical Brothers, we’ve become the Chemo Sisters.”Both also told of their fear of dying after they lost their sister Bernie to cancer in 2013 at the age of 52, but remain determined to beat it.Linda said: “It’s just really hard and I’m scared of dying. I don’t want to die.“I want to be around and see my great nieces and nephews grow up, and that’s why I’m putting everything I’ve got into trying to get well.”Anne’s treatment has proved particularly difficult, as she spent 11 days in hospital after the chemo made her ill. She also revealed she has been suffering with anxiety attacks as a result of the added stresses of the pandemic, which mean she has not been able to see her daughters and grandchildren. “I’ve not touched them, I’ve not been able to hug them or kiss them, and I think that’s what makes me more sad than anything,” she said. Both sisters are undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy, with Anne finishing her’s first on 11 September. She has been told she will have either a mastectomy or lumpectomy, most likely followed by radiotherapy.Linda faces living with cancer for the rest of her life, but she has been told if she responds to treatment, she could have a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years. She said: “By that time I’ll be an old woman. I’ll be 75 in 15 years, and I would’ve had a great life. The medical device manufacturer improved its hardware, pivoted to agile-like teams, and created new innovation studios to pursue the latest in digital health technology, among other improvements.
When the coronavirus hit, that transformation proved critical to keeping the business afloat.
"It's because we made all of those changes in the last few years that we were so well-positioned to make the swift, dramatic changes that COVID forced upon us," Chef Information Officer Jodi Eddy told Business Insider.

MARLBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS — Back in February, Boston Scientific chief information officer Jodi Eddy extolled the medical device company's four-year digital transformation, detailing the many improvements to operational speed and efficiency to Business Insider.
This was just as COVID-19 was beginning to make more headlines in the US, but still weeks before the pandemic overtook daily life the way it has now. But those advancements would prove to be a lifeline for the company after it, like many other firms, transitioned the majority of its employees to remote work and suddenly had to make difficult decisions about the future.
It's yet another example of how digital investments enabled businesses to accommodate — nearly overnight — entirely new operating procedures and stay resilient during an unprecedented global health crisis.
"We have been preparing for this moment for the past four years through this transformation," Eddy told Business Insider in a July interview. "It's because we made all of those changes in the last few years that we were so well-positioned to make the swift, dramatic changes that COVID forced upon us."
The digital transformation included improvements to basic IT functions but, on a deeper level, required a pivot to more cross-functional teams that paired tech professionals with business experts to dramatically cut-down the time it takes to get new products or innovations out the door — a management style commonly referred to as agile, one that companies like Fidelity have also used to improve productivity in the last few months.
Boston Scientific — which reported $10.7 billion in revenue for 2019, a 9.3% boost over the prior year — also propped up new innovation studios that could capitalize on the latest tech in digital health and launched an automated dashboard to give senior leaders a quick overview of everything from day-to-day financial metrics to cybersecurity incidents. The overhaul also enabled Boston Scientific to quickly handle increased usage of tools like augmented reality-based device support and online medical education courses.
"This global pandemic has broken down barriers that were there in the past," said Eddy. "It was just, 'Are you ready to go from zero to a hundred overnight?' And I would say we went from zero to a hundred in like a week. Maybe not overnight."
Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships
For Eddy, most of the past four years was spent building up Boston Scientific's defense against something as significant as the coronavirus pandemic.
It tapped Office 365 and Microsoft Teams prior to the shift to remote work, which made the pivot to virtual collaboration easier. The company also created what Eddy calls an "omnichannel" experience for employees, under which they could access their documents and other data on any device.
Boston Scientific also used zScaler for its cloud security needs — a platform that other CIOs also relied on during the outbreak for its ability to rapidly grow with business needs. So when COVID hit at full-force and remote work became the norm, there was "minimal" work that Eddy had to do apart from increasing the user licenses for its virtual private network.
"Because we were so well-positioned on the defense side, we were able to quickly shift our priorities to offense," she said.
Reports that the executive team used to look at quarterly were now being viewed daily — and sometimes, like when it came to admission numbers at hospitals across the globe, the cadence picked up to hourly dispatches. The information came in use as Boston Scientific plotted out its immediate response and plan for the rest of 2020.
"We basically had to rewrite our annual operating plan like everybody else in like a period of weeks, something we usually spend months on," she said.
And like at other firms, the pandemic had the silver-lining at Boston Scientific of highlighting just how critical IT — a department that is historically used to operating in the shadows — is to the enterprise.
"It went overnight from 'nice to have' and important for efficiency to drive optimization, to business-line critical for operations," said Eddy. "The big opportunity and innovation is now: How do I leverage digital? In early March, The Tory Burch Foundation hosted its Embrace Action 2020 Summit, which saw leaders and entrepreneurs from around the world gather to talk about gender parity and inclusion in the workforce.
At the Summit, Bank of America COO Thomas Montag spoke with former AOL CEO Steve Case, Goldman Sachs Partner Dina Powell, and Tory Burch about how their companies aimed to create a more inclusive industry.
Diane von Furstenberg also spoke at the conference, as did Gloria Steinem, former co-CEO of Ariel Investments Mellody Hobson, and activist-model Halima Aden.
Yasmin Green, director of research and development for Jigsaw, an internal tech incubator within Google parent company Alphabet, spoke about the role human bias plays when programming artificial intelligence.

The Tory Burch Foundation Summit in early March was a gathering of some of the most prominent executives and entrepreneurs in the world.
Bank of America COO Thomas Montag former AOL CEO Steve Case, and Dina Powell McCormick, partner and member of the Management Committee at Goldman Sachs, were a few of the execs who spoke about how they sought to make their companies more inclusive.
A prominent theme throughout the conference was gender parity in the workplace.
"The word 'ambition' takes on a completely different meaning when applied to a woman than when applied to a man," Burch told Business Insider. "Women are criticized for exhibiting the exact same quality men are praised for. This has to change. We do that by shining a light on unconscious gender bias, which was the focus of our Summit."
Yasmin Green, director of research and development at Jigsaw, a unit of Google parent company Alphabet, spoke about one particularly complex hurdle in modern society: the difficulty of programming artificial intelligence without bias.
The problem with training AI on humans, Green said, is that humans are biased, and when the data that feeds AI is biased, then the AI becomes biased itself.
"Are we content with algorithms that reflect back to us the way the world works?"
Green detailed an experiment that demonstrated this unconscious bias in AI. She and her team created the same fake professional profile for a woman and a man and browsed online job sites as each of these imaginary people. In the end, they found that men were five times as likely to see ads for higher-paying jobs than women.
This, she said, was because women believe they must fulfill 100% of the requirements before they apply to a job, whereas men believe they only need to meet at least 60% of the requirements before they apply to the job.
"So at the same skill level, we [women] are clicking on jobs that are less senior and less well paid," Green said. "But if we click that way, then the internet is going to learn and that's what we're going to see."
Green cited another example, in which she and her team had trained an AI model to pick up on hate speech on social media. After a few trials, their AI model began to flag the sentence, "I am a proud gay man," as a hate sentence.
Green said this was because they trained the AI model by using millions of example sentences that humans wrote on the internet, and most sentences and comments that contained the word "gay" were negative — 80% of them, in fact.
Therefore, the AI model Green's team experimented with took this data and learned to associate the term "gay" with something negative and hateful.
"I ask myself how can I raise my daughters to make good decisions in life, [and] to be more compassionate and less prejudiced than the world around them," Green said at the conference. "The question for us — are we content with algorithms that reflect back to us the way the world works?"
To help prevent situations like this and lessen the bias in AI, Green said social justice activism needs to be expanded to include algorithm. She also noted the importance of having diverse representation in AI programming.
"It's not enough just to automate human behavior," she said.
