Twisted Pairs Vs. Braided Cables - Which is better?

Cables come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. These shapes are designed to serve different purposes and are used differently as well. Among the many categories that are designed to separate them, there are twisted pairs and braided cables. The purpose of these cables is to transfer data, however, they are used differently according to their functionality. Both types of cables are designed to transmit data with minimum interference.

There can be a network designed which is based on a combination of twisted pair and the braided cables. A different section may have different types of cables installed within them. Many factors influence the type of cable which is selected for a specific purpose. The objective is achieved in several ways. Let’s try to understand the difference between these two cables in detail.

Twisted Pairs

Twisted pair cable is a type of coax cable which is generally used for telecommunications. These cables have twisted pairs of insulated wire, this is where the name “Twisted Pairs” comes from. There are two types of twisted-pair cables that are used, the difference is classified according to them being shielded or unshielded.

-       Unshielded Twisted Pairs: This type of cable is comparatively cheaper as compared to the one we will discuss next. There is a downside to this cable i.e. it is more prone to interference from the surrounding environment.

-       Foiled / shielded Twisted Pairs: The foiled/unshielded twisted pair contains a foil shield to protect it.

The installation of coax cables can be quite difficult, this is why sometimes two conductors can be twisted to form a twisted cable. One of the many advantages of this type of cabling is that it is thinner. Being thin means it is easy to integrate with other cables. However, these types of cables are not capable of supporting the system in the long run.

In the bargain, the design of the twisted cable is more affordable. Additionally, they are more capable of transmitting data at higher rates. They can be connected through the RJ45 connector. This connector is very similar to the one used in telephones but it is designed specifically for the twisted pairs. It would be useful to know that all category cables fall into the category of twisted pair cables. However, not each of the twisted pair cables is category cables. Some of the twisted pair cables fall under a different category altogether.

Twisted Pair Cables are especially useful in areas where a large amount of interference is expected. It is recommended to use the shielded twisted pair cables in such areas. These types of cables are especially useful in areas where motors are running. The twisted cables are also capable of long runs and can be shielded in a variety of ways.

Braided Cables

The second type of cable that we will be discussing are the braided cables. Braided cables are more commonly known as braided coaxial cables. The braided coaxial cables have two conductors. There is one in the center and one on the outside. These two conductors are separated through an insulator in the middle. This makes a total of four insulation layers. The conductor on the inside is covered with an insulating layer made up of a dielectric material. Since the transfer of the signal takes place both ways, the circuit in the forward direction takes place in the inner conductor. While the later which is the braided section, has signal running in the opposite direction making it return circuit.

Braided cables are less costly as compared to other cables. Another advantage is that they can be used for different frequency transmissions. This is why braided cables are essentially used for cable TV. They are also useful in making connections between different components such as that of DVD players etc. Their preference is also explained by the amazing property that they have. The cables are protected against external electromagnetic signals. This makes them ideal to be placed next to metallic objects. They are capable of minimizing external interference and lessen power loss. However, they are not used widely for computer-based networks.

Similar to the “Twisted Pair” cables, the “Braided cables” are generally of two types. They are classified according to their resistance. The first one is of 75 Ohms, this type of cable is useful in transmitting video signals. The second type is known for its 50 Ohm resistance. This type of transmission is based on two-way communication.

Which to Choose?

Explaining the properties and working of the cable types was just one step towards helping you understand which cable to use. Your choice should be based on factors like cost, durability, functionality, reliability, and usage. Although, both of them are widely used, there are certain things for you to remember while purchasing them.

Braided or Coax Cables are generally better to use for residential needs or TV connections which includes video connections as well. They are more popular for establishing a Local Area Network (LAN) due to the high level of resistivity they offer against the interference of signals.

On the other hand, the twisted pairs are more useful when there is an issue with the cost. Since, the twisted pair is cheaper they are more appropriate if the cost is a problem. However, a major disadvantage remains that these cables do not provide any protection from electromagnetic waves. This makes their usage limited since they cannot be used near metallic objects.

It is also advisable to use coax or braided cables where longer cable lengths are required. These types of cables can be shielded in different ways such as foil shielding, FTP jacket or even a combination of both. Your choice is also dependent on the frequency of operation. Therefore, it is quite evident that your choice of the cable has more to do with what kind of operation you are using it for. The design and properties do make a difference, but it is more about finding the properties that will be helpful to you.
