Tips to Remove Stains out of Your Furniture

Consider this, your friends are over your place for a movie night with pizza and soft drinks and somehow a slice of it ends up on the cushion of the couch. Or maybe you were solving a crossword and fell asleep while the ink of your pen leaked on the couch.

Couch stains are unavoidable and being the centerpiece of your home, it needs immediate attention. There are several stains which you can get on your couch, but the best way to remove it is through hiring a professional cleaning service provider to do the job. However, there are several ways to get your couch cleaned without having to hire a professional.

The first step to cleaning your couch is to check the cleaning codes. They are usually found under the cushion. These codes are responsible to tell if your couch has particular cleaning requirements. Here is the codes which you need to take care of:

  • W means water cleaning only
  • S means using dry solvent to clean
  • SW mean dry solvent and wet cleaning, both are appropriate.
  • X means professional cleaning or vacuuming only

If your couch has an X make sure to contact a professional cleaning service to achieve the best results.

The second step is vacuuming before cleaning the stains off the couch. This step helps in removing any crumbs or residue that would otherwise sink in the couch.

1. Most food stains

Water and soap is the most common solvent to clean any food stain. Use a soft sponge or a clean cloth to clean the spot. You can use warm water for the solvent unless the stain was off a dairy product. If you don’t know what caused the stain, it is recommendable to stick with cool water only.

2. Greasy stains

Sprinkle some baking soda over the stain or make a paste of it by combining a little water and apply it on the stain. The goal is to soak the oil out so, let it sit on the spot for some time and use vacuum to clean baking soda from it. Then use a bit of dish soap and scrub the stain with a soft toothbrush and blot it clean with a paper towel.

3. Berry stains

Use the mixture of vinegar and laundry detergent into four cups of water. Dab the solution on the stain with the clean cloth and blot it with clean water afterwards.

4. Coffee stains

It is easy to remove a coffee stain. One simply have to rub some liquid detergent over the stain and blot it with a paper towel and warm water.

5. Ink stains

Use a little rubbing alcohol over the stain and blot it with the paper towel starting from the corner of the stain. A dry cleaning solvent can also work in cases such as this. However, whatever technique you use, do not rub on the stain or it’ll only spread further.

6. Pet urines

Pour half a cup of water and half cup of vinegar on the stain and then blot it with a clean rag until you’ve removed the moisture. Sprinkle baking soda over it and let it dry to help reduce the odor. Vacuum the baking soda of the residue once its dry.
