Essential Information Coverings for Corona Treater Sleeves & Benefits

There are many applications of corona treater sleeves since it has excellent electrical and chemical resistance. It is ideal for harsh environments. The properties of the jacket depend a great deal on the type of coverings. One of the most popular covers is the dielectric silicone sleeve that is made from a silicon and rubber compound. There are many other types of coverings available, and each has unique properties, for example, epoxy & thermosets, glass covering, etc.

This article goes on to describe the types of coverings for corona treater sleeves, their unique characteristics, and the benefits of using silicone sleeves.

Types of Coverings

  • Rubber & Silicon: The rubber covering was one of the first corona treater coverings. The rubber and silicone covering are one of the most popular ones with the necessary level of corona treatment. This ensures it has excellent resistance to heat and ozone. However, if it is exposed to ozone directly for a long period, it will be easily cut.
  • Epoxy & Thermosets: This type of coatings is considered harder thermostat coating. Epoxy, polyester, and glass composite material are also referred to as epoxies and are mostly the second generation of corona treater coverings. These are typically very hard, with high resistance to cuts and also have stable electrical properties. They tend to be vulnerable to chemicals, especially when it is directly exposed to ozone and the corona.
  • Glass Covering: This type of covering was introduced in the 70s. This is mostly made from borosilicate glass (BS), often also referred to as Pyrex. This type of coverage is highly resistant to oxidation; it is also shock resistant since it has low thermal conductivity.
  • Ceramic Covering: This type of coverage is also highly resistant to cuts and abrasions and is usually also quite hard. It consists of an inert ceramic surface that will not erode even if with direct exposure of corona. Since it is thermally conductive, it can be effectively water-cooled.

Benefits of Silicone Sleeve

There are many benefits of using a corona treater with silicon sleeve as the covering. Here are some of the benefits listed here:

  • Strong Dielectric Strength: The dielectric strength is the voltage required to penetrate an insulator of specific thickness and one that is free from defects. The way it works is that the dielectric strength of the covering needs to be higher than that of the peak voltage. There should be a safe margin too. This is expressed as volts per mil or kilovolts per mm. The silicone sleeve is a dielectric covering from a specific silicon rubber compound with excellent Dielectric strength. They also tend to last longer since they are made from very tight OD tolerance and resistance.
  • Cover Thickness: The voltages of the corona generators will typically range from 10 to 12 VK RMS. The thickness of the cover can vary depending on eccentricity and taper. However, the dielectric strength will be lower for thinner sheets. The silicone sleeve is available in different levels of thickness like 4, 6, and 8 inches, which are the popular ones. It is also to find them in the lower range if necessary with a thickness of 1,2,3, or 5 inches.
  • Power Density: This is the level of continuous wattage that a corona roller can cover safely. The power rating or power density is about the average running temperature of the cover. This also tends to affect its physical and electrical properties. It is beneficial to use a nontoxic pen since it has a good power density.
