Can separation save a marriage?

Although the break-up of a marriage usually leads to its formal termination, this cannot always be the case. Divorce is the ultimate solution, so if there is a chance to save the relationship, it is always worthwhile to decide to extend a helping hand to your spouse.

Among the possibilities offered by Polish law to couples looking for the most effective solution to serious marital problems is separation, and although it does not guarantee that an agreement will be reached to save the relationship, it is worth considering the benefits of resorting to it.

Unlike divorce, separation does not give spouses the right to enter into other formal relationships, nor does it exempt them from the obligation of mutual assistance. Its advantage is, among other things, that it is much easier to obtain a separation than obtaining a divorce, and it is also worth noting that it is a less expensive solution. The law does not define the time that would have to be taken to apply this solution, nor are there rules that prevent divorce where separation would not contribute to solving the growing conflicts in another way.

Couples who have succeeded in saving their marriage by taking advantage of separation highlight that it is time for reflection. Divorce is the ultimate solution, from which there is generally no appeal, and separation allows the strongest emotions to be calmed down and the most beneficial solution for both spouses and children, who often suffer from the crisis in their relationship. Separated spouses do not have to share a household, so they have a chance to see what their life could be like after a divorce. It is often the case that the freedom they desire, which they get as a substitute for their separation, has a bitter taste and no longer appears to be the ideal solution to all problems.

It is also worth noting that separation can help spouses to distance themselves from each other. The end of everyday quarrels and the reduction of responsibilities to the partner results in time that can be spent on creative thinking. Many spouses use this time to reflect on themselves and their foundations, and the result of the reflection is that a relationship crisis can rarely be blamed solely on one of its parties. Separation does not guarantee that a marriage can be saved. Separation does not guarantee that a marriage can be saved.
