Signal allows conversation and profile migration between iOS devices

Transferring data from one iOS to another made easy and the credit goes to Signal. Signal declared openly on Tuesday that it has acquired the potential to transfer the secure messaging app’s information from an existing iOS device to a new one. It just verifies the number of a new device and creates a QR code for it. The data transfer process will begin once the QR code is scanned by the old device. The new device will verify the integrity of the data transferred and the existing device will always remain in complete control.

According to the company, “Signal creates a novel key pair for the encrypted device-to-device connection, and a MAC is embedded in the new device’s QR code so the existing device can verify the connection.”

The company also claimed that the QR code is completely safe and doesn’t include any private information. It goes on saying that, “If somebody  is in the same room and moves across the desk or races to scan it first, the worst-case scenario is that they could start transferring their data to the new device before you.” And even if this happens, you can just reinstall the app and begin the process again.

This is a huge shift in the iOS functionality brought about by Signal. Moving to a new iOS has never been this easy that too without losing any data. This was only the privilege of the Android users who are easily able to move message history into another device if they have a backup file and correctly enter the 30- digit passcode. Apple user has been long unaware of the ‘file system’ and Apple’s ‘Files’ app is very new and also not available in many of its devices.

Signal recently endorsed that they identify that this functionality does not cover all scenarios, but they feel that it is a decent start. They are planning to continue to improvd on this feature.

Last month it launched its PIN feature with which phone numbers would no longer be used as profile identities. The PIN will encrypt profile information, account settings, and local contacts, and will store a copy of all the data on Signal’s servers. It will not cover messages, which remain on devices.

Just like on Android, if a user forgets their PIN, backups cannot be recovered. All in all, it’s a good deal of gain for iOS users.
