The Year That Will Be: The Political Battles of 2021

The Year That Will Be: The Political Battles of 2021

The pandemic situation of 2020 is going to cause huge political battles during the upcoming 2021 elections. The elections are scheduled to happen in four states (i.e., West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu) and a Union Territory i.e., Puducherry. The BJP is slowly entering the midway of the second term of their governance. The result will not only reflect the position of the status of Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also show where the opposition party competes against the strong RSS-BJP combination, just 3 years prior to the next general elections.

Around 16-crore people from five different regions of India will participate in the elections. The results that will be declared on the 2nd of May will shape the political future of India. Although elections are held every year in many parts of the country, this year’s elections are very significant. The pandemic conditions and the protests will have a huge impact on the results of the elections.

Out of the five regions, West Bengal will witness the toughest fight between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee. After a long time, the BJP has a chance to enter Bengal; a victory for BJP will make them stronger and more confident for the upcoming 2024 general elections. On the other hand, a victory for Mamata Banerjee against the powerful BJP will make her a star not only in that region but nationally. Let us now see the political conditions in individual regions and get to understand how these battles of 2021 are likely to turn out.

Assam

In 2016, the BJP experienced an unexpected victory, after a long reign of the Congress National Party in Assam. This time, it is a challenging task for them to regain power by defeating Congress and regional parties like AGP. The BJP Sarkar, under Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma, has strengthened the organisational networks in the state. The death of Tarun Gogoi will have a great impact on the current position of Congress, but their alliance with Badruddin Ajmal’s AUDF can prevent the division of Muslim votes.

Kerala

In Kerala, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led alliance are the two biggest contenders for the 2021 elections. The years have seen the alternating power of these two parties in the state. But this time the LDF has shown its power and stronger position by winning many local elections. This election will also be very important for Congress because Rahul Gandhi, as a Member of Parliament from Wayanad, is more likely to participate in the Congress campaign.

Tamil Nadu

This will be the first election in Tamil Nadu without M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa, the two great leaders of this state who dominated the landscape for decades. This can be an ideal scenario for the BJP to retain influence over the Tamil Nadu government; it will be a step ahead towards its expansion. BJP is not very popular in Tamil Nadu as it is known as Hindi-speaking party. The ally with AIADMK has made it stronger but still has a long way to go.

West Bengal

The West Bengal assembly elections will affect the positions for BJP in the upcoming 2024 general election. By looking at the current status of BJP, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is on the defensive end. The BJP is trying different strategies to give a tough fight to Mamata Banerjee’s Congress. This party is gaining attention by using Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity, claiming corruption charges against TMC cadres and Hindu consolidation. The BJP is looking very strong but underestimating Trinamool’s strength before the results would be BJP’s ‘historic blunder’.

Puducherry

Congress has dominated Puducherry politics for decades. The Union Territory with a Legislative Assembly of its own has been governed by the Congress for the last four and a half years. BJP has the best chance of governing in the South, where it has not moved beyond Karnataka.

The five regions’ elections will shape the future of politics in India. All the parties need to gain power and extend their region. It will be very interesting to spectate the battles between BJP, Congress and the regional parties.
