The Debate About Candles

There is an ongoing debate about candles. Some experts claim it is harmful to human health to burn candles at home while others completely reject this fact and encourage candle burning as being something soothing for people. Therefore, in this article, we will present you with some facts and information regarding both the arguments being held about candles so that you can decide for yourself if it is useful or not.

Material of Candle Wicks

While there were candles in the past that were made of lead, it was banned a long time ago by the government. Therefore the sale and purchase of lead-based candles were halted because they were a source of hazard as studies indicated that lead inhalation can lead to various diseases like lead poisoning, especially in children.

Candle Wax Made From Toxic Elements

Most of the modern candles are manufactured using paraffin wax which is made from petroleum. A study conducted in 2009, stated that paraffin wax releases harmful chemicals as a result of burning. The study was never officially published and the European candle association also raised some concerns regarding the report’s reliability. Some researchers found out that the level of chemical releases from candles was below the amount by which any human can get health problems.

The Toxicity Of Candle Smoke

Any smoke that you breathe can cause potential harm. It is therefore wise not to inhale any smoke for long durations of time. A candle has been said to release smoke similar to a diesel engine. Therefore, it should be used only in open areas and rooms.

Scented Candles

Scented candles can release formaldehyde which can increase the chances of cancer. It isn’t clear whether your health gets affected by it or not. However, some allergic reactions may occur due to scented candles that include a lot of sneezing, a runny nose, and sinus blockage.

All in all, a candle and its smoke are known to be harmful. Even if there are fewer researches conducted on this subject, we should always use precaution because it can potentially cause us harm. Therefore, do not rely on scented candles or regular ones all the time and avoid using them in small tight places. Last but not least, a candle should never be left unattended anywhere as it can cause a potential fire if any incident takes place. Therefore, we recommend practicing caution when using any type of candle.
