Important Details You Should Know About The Connecticut Window Tinting Laws

If you live in Connecticut and wondering if you can get away with illegal car tint, the answer is NO if the police pull you over and find that your tint is darker than the permissible limit.

The state of Connecticut measures a tint's darkness using VLT percentage or what is called the Visible Light Transmission. This percentage refers to the amount of visible light that can pass through your windows which means that a 75% VLT allows 75% of the light to pass through while a 5% VLT only allows 5% of the light. Thus, the former is lighter and the latter is darker.

If it is your first offense, the officer will generally issue you with a warning ticket but if it's your second one, you are surely getting a ticket that can cost you $250 or more.

This is considered higher than most other states which is why you’re strongly advised to follow the Connecticut window tinting laws. Here's what you should know:

LEGAL TINT LIMIT FOR PASSENGER VEHICLES

Front Windshield: One must only use non-reflective tint above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line.
Front-seat side windows: You can use up to 35% tint darkness
Back seat side windows: You can use any tint darkness
Rear window: You can use any tint darkness

LEGAL TINT LIMIT FOR MULTI-PURPOSE VEHICLES

Front Windshield: One must only use non-reflective tint above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line.
Front-seat side windows: You can use up to 35% tint darkness
Back seat side windows: You can use any tint darkness
Rear window: You can use any tint darkness

However, you can get a medical exemption from Connecticut window tinting laws if you have a piece of medical evidence, which you're required to carry with you at all times, that you suffer from a light-sensitive skin condition or an auto-immune disease.
