Top 7 Facts About the Life at International Schools in Singapore

You’ve made a list of the top choices for schools. Before you pick the best international school in Singapore for your kids, though, make sure you know a thing or two about what your children can expect. Here are seven facts about life in Singapore’s top international schools that are similar or close to what your kids might expect.

Not Everyone is Rich

There’s a misconception that all the kids in these schools are rich and come from well-off families. Even within the expat community, that’s not true. Many of the students have parents who scrimp and save just to afford the tuition and provide their kids with quality education.

It’s Not an American Sitcom

When people hear international school, they immediately assume that the kids go to a school that’s close to what they see on American sitcoms. Nothing can be further from the truth when you talk about local international schools. The student population is heterogenous, though you can expect the population to be diverse. However, scholars or students are often Indonesian or Chinese.

They’re Not as Snobbish

It’s easy to think that all the students who go to these schools are snobbish. Just because most of the students are rich, they must feel like they’re better than everybody else out there, right? No. It is like every other regular school. Most of the students are friendly and grounded. You’ll find students who know that their schooling is different but that it doesn’t make them superior in any way over someone else.

They Don’t Party Everyday

People automatically assume that just because someone went to a good international school that they’re part of the party culture. There are a ton of stories about how students go crazy over the booze and have wild parties. But that’s not true for everyone. Yes, some of the students might party, but many prefer to chill at home with Netflix or indulge in more creative hobbies.

They Don’t All Have an Accent

Don’t automatically assume that students in the best international schools in Singapore have an American or British account. Being in an international school alters one’s accent, but while some do have an American or British accent, many others don’t. Also, many of the students who come from the local system retain their individual accents even after going to an international school.

There are Strict Dress Codes

Some may let the senior students get away with hair highlights and even a double piercing or two. But expect the students to strictly comply with a dress code. That is, the skirts need to brush the knees and can’t be rolled up. Also, the top button of their clothes must be buttoned up. With an aim to maintain cultural diversity, girls are usually not allowed to have more than one piercing on each ear.

There are Exams

Some people think that the students don’t have any exams because they don’t have PSLE or O levels. But the students actually have IGCSE’s and take exams at least once a year for every grade they’re in. You can expect your child to go through those exams, too. Those can help your kids score stellar grades for IB, though.
