The Knee Replacement.

The Knee

Although the knee may seem like a simple joint, it is actually one of the most complicated joints in the body, and it is the joint most likely to be injured at some stage in your life.

The knee joint is made up of bones (which support the knee and provide the rigid structure), muscles (which are what move the joint), ligaments (which hold the whole joint together and stabilize it) and cartilage (which protects the joint. and allows the bones to slide freely over each other).

The knee joint is made up of four bones. The femur, which is the large bone in your thigh, is attached by ligaments and a capsule to the tibia (the shin bone). Just below and parallel to the tibia is the fibula. The kneecap or patella travels through the front of the joint when the knee is bent. The patella or patella is a bone that is inserted in the patellar tendon. When the knee moves, it not only bends (flexion) and straightens (extension), but it also rotates on the inner (medial) side of the joint, making a very complex movement when bending.

Knee surgery

Knee surgery is not a new technique; there is evidence that ancient Egyptians performed knee operations, although probably for traumatic injuries, not knee diseases. Knee surgery really began in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and total knee replacements began shortly after the end of World War II. Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of the knee that have been injured or damaged by disease (such as osteoarthritis) are replaced with joint replacement prostheses.

Advantages and disadvantages.

The main benefit of any joint replacement, including knee replacement, is pain relief. A total knee replacement will eliminate the pain of an arthritic knee and should allow the patient to return to most normal activities of life and work. Knee replacement

Prostheses Modern, including noncompartmental prostheses and mobile polyethylene liner, allow young patients to regain an active lifestyle, with the possibility of some sports activities. As with any joint replacement intervention, knee replacement it is a major surgical operation and some postoperative complications may occur. Typically, these possible complications are not directly related to the prosthesis, and can include infections and blood clots. In a small percentage of cases, it may be necessary to remove the prosthesis, treat the infection and make another replacement later.

Activity levels and long-term results of knee replacement.

Knee replacements have been shown to work as well as hip replacements, at least in the typical elderly patient population where up to 90% of prostheses continue to function for 10 years or more. The recent challenge for prosthetic manufacturers is to deliver these same results to young, active patients. These patients can have activity levels 20-30 times higher than the elderly.

Should I have a knee replacement?

Your orthopedic surgeon can advise you on whether knee replacement is right for you and what treatment options are available. The knee replacement is an elective and you intervention. The patient is who makes the decision to have surgery.

Both hip and knee replacement operations are daily and very successful in relieving pain and allowing patients to return to relatively normal activity levels. The more information you get about knee replacement treatments, the better your ability to decide whether or not you want to have this operation.

Summary.

There are several treatment options available for patients with severe knee arthritis. Not all of these options are suitable for all patients. The surgeon is the only person who can advise you on the most appropriate options for your case. Not all surgeons offer all treatment options, therefore it is important that you request a referral to a surgeon who offers the treatment options you are considering.

The knee replacement It is a very successful procedure that is performed on hundreds of thousands of patients annually around the world.
